MADD “chapters”

In my older age, I’ve been trying to do more volunteer work with different agencies and I must say I was rather “alarmed” at the level of hate these people have. Everyone that I met that night were also volunteers and hadn’t been personally affected by a dd (thank goodness). According to them, if you have ANYTHING to drink and get behind the wheel you belong in jail for years. These people seemed unhinged. Anyone have experience with MADD? Did I just have a bad experience?

South Carolina has had some huge laxity in drunk driving... Good ole boy crap, I have been directly impacted by the joke of the system. I'd welcome some unhinged MADD chapters going ham on our legislators.

I had a traffic ticket (speeding) in 96.,
A dui case was on the docket. MADD was out in full force. It looked like something out of the movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame, without the pitchforks.
That's all I got.

Eventually madd will get the legal limit down to .02
They’re neoprohibitionists
ETA: they can’t lower it below .02 because the machine has a .02 margin of error and things like orange juice and energy drinks will set it off

Need to bring it back. I went to the Keg at 16 but I'm better adjusted than these kids today.

I'm 6', 181#.
Can I have a Weller, double, with my Ceasar salad, 8 or rare filet over a 2 hour period and still be too drunk to drive?

Not supporting drunk driving at all, but it’s hard for me to believe that there is a majority of the public that agree with their over the top views. I consider myself very conservative, but they were way off base

MADD always struck me as attracting a lot of zealots who are looking for an outlet for outrage/sanctimony - sort of like what we saw with COVID. People probably not otherwise all that connected to the thing (be it drunk driving problems or communicable illness concerns, etc.) are sucked into a cause and the personalities of those people don't allow for much nuance.
I'm sure MADD does a lot of good work, but I feel like it's been viewed as pretty over the top for a long time (again, more so due to the zealotry of members than the underlying concept).

not personally but a guy I worked with.
they automatically assume if you get a DUI, you're a hopeless alcoholic and belong in jail.
the dude actually very rarely drank. and when he did, he din't drink very much.
Company Christmas party, he had a few beers (as in 2 or 3 tops). Wasn't "drunk", but was over legal limit and got popped on his way home for running a stop sign.
paid his fine, had to attend X amount of AA meetings, and had to go see the local MADD chapter.
wouldn't accept that he wasn't really a drinker.
insisted he was an alcoholic in denial.

Fair enough... what is over the top? I think you mentioned they believe one drink should equal no driving... anything else that makes them unhinged and over the top? I don't know much about them but I do know the guy that hit me basically got away with it and there wasn't a damn thing I could do but watch him walk out the courthouse.

Yep, if I'm getting a DUI, I'm gonna make it worth it. I'm not going down for a wimpy .08
(it's a joke, Karen)

If you show any trace of alcohol, you lose your license forever and get thrown in jail for a month ( 1st offense). After hearing that, I quietly left. The people at my local no kill animal clinic will get my volunteer hours from now on…

You are also functionally illiterate.

FYI, the law does not require you to be "drunk" to arrest you. Just that you be over the legally defined limit. As you might expect, society isn't interested in a system where a person consuming alcohol gets to be the final authority on whether he is fit to drive.
I enjoy not dying at the hands of a drunk who was sure he could drive fine. the fact that we're talking about the low BAC limit is a good thing.
