Why is this a story? I think most people within certain generations have the same view on the whole trans thing.
Everyone should have fair and equal rights, but you ask anyone.. I'd say 35 years old and up what they think about the whole trans thing and if one becomes a woman by simply having surgery, 85% of the responses would be similar.
I think it was Chappelle who said something about how trans women don't have periods so they don't know what its like to be a real woman.
So I just don't get why this is a story.

One of the worst parts of all this bullshite is the use of "phobia." She is correct.
If trans believed surgery or identity change turned them into true women or men most would no longer consider themselves alphabets or use “they”.
For example
Ellen Page - lesbian female - alphabet
After some manga magic along with surgery
Elliot Page - straight male - no alphabets
Same for Chasity/Chase Bono.
