The same engineering firm from KC that got paid to study the TRam is studying the Plank Road Express.
Is it coincidental or do you think it's politics?

Plank Road was somewhere to be avoided growing up in Baton Rouge from 1970-1990.

Something changed?

Plank Rd Corridor?

Like a mass grave?

I’m glad I finally moved out of BR. It’s so frustrating watching them stare down progress and development right in its face and go “ehh nahhhhhhh” and continue to fall behind.

The increase in tourist/nightlife/business development from a tram would lead to more $$ for them to build their bus route to the ghetto if they want it after the fact.

The bus route has 0 chance of ever returning value to the city. Especially not 50 mil. How much do busses cost? 80k at most? The whole thing is insane.

Tram is dumb as well

Why waste so much money on a tram when an uber ride to downtown is less that $10?

Wouldn’t something like that get expensive over time if you’re someone who doesn’t have a personal vehicle?

Doing that during game day or other big events is impossible. Or basically anytime after 3 on business days.

People eat that shite up. They love the novelty of it.

Plus you already have to Uber to everything in BR because none of the night life areas are connected or closer than a 10-20 minute drive. Anything that makes the barrier between those spots easier has upside.

seems expensive for a couple of busses

Holy shite THIS! How is the cost of a bus route even in the neighborhood of $50 Million?! I would think breaking seven figures at all would be a stretch for a bus line!

So taxpayers should continue to have to foot the bill for people who never did shite with their life and can't save enough money to buy a car to get to/from work?

One of the most frustrating things about any city. These people are literally worthless and add zero value to society . It'll never change until the welfare system is reformed and these worthless arsehats have to work for a living

I'm going to play devils advocate here based on all the responses posters have given.

I'd imagine the Plank Road route is one of, if not the most highly trafficked route for CATS. If they are trying to expand their top 3-5 routes to BRT levels of service, this would be the most logical place to start, and also spur economic development in what we all consider NBR.

When they say LSU to NBR, they are mainly stating that they are working on a line of service that is 3-4x longer than what was originally planned for Nicholson, at half the cost.

I can see how the move from a tram to BRT makes sense. If you have seen setups in other cities, it allows tram/streetcar like service with the flexibility of using buses. And it is a huge decrease in cost compared to the outlay they were anticipating for a much shorter line on Nicholson from Downtown to LSU.

While I'm not happy this is being completed before a change to Nicholson, Perkins, Florida or Government, I can see how this could be a logical decision.

Downvote away

A Tram from LSU to Downtown is going to do little to increase tourism, nightlife and business Downtown or at LSU.

The bus thing being bad doesn't make the Tram good. Both would be boondoggles.

This is a horrible idea, but a new bus can easily cost near $500k each.

So someone who can't afford a vehicle and needs to ride a Tram is going to really help the economy???

I agree it makes sense for CATS to do this under their mandate.
But why is the mayor getting involved with CP money?

Within CATS I have no objection, but I do need more details as to exactly what is required to run this express line.

I would also like to know what the demand is, how many riders, etc.

Out of all the crap in this thread these are all reasonable questions that should be answered before proceeding. As to CP money I could see a justification if this is part of a larger plan focusing on infrastructure improvements and econ. dev. incentives in the Plank Rd corridor.

People don't want to hear it but if Plank Rd improves that means the whole city is better off. However, that doesn't necessarily mean this should take precedence over other community needs.
