LSU tailgating with HD Antenna

Setting up a tailgate for the first time. We have a tv and a generator, but no direct tv account. So we were gonna just get an HD antenna. What channels do ya'll get out there with this setup?

You should get all , CBS, ABC, NBC, and a Fox station I'd imagine. I'm not sure if you will get just the basic channel or the HD ones or not. But you should without question be able to catch all the major network games with it.

I got about 20 channels with an HD antenna, but half of them were PBS or Spanish-language channels.

WAFB is spotty, hard to pick up but once you lock on it the picture is perfect. WBRZ, WGMB, and WVLA are all easy to get.

If only there was a Tech Board...
Depends on where you are on campus. Channel 9 is the roughest, specifically because it is actually *on* VHF channel 9. Helps to have clear line-of-sight to the tower down on River Road.
As for those "HD Antennas"... please-please don't get sucked into the marketing hype. All they are are what we old geezers call UHF antennas. Thus the issue with WAFB.

Any antenna on campus will probably get great HD with no problem. "HD" on an antenna box is just marketing pablum.
I prefer one that is powered but it's probably not required. $30-$45 Home Depot or the like.

for the last ten years I have used a battery and inverter to power a 26" TV all day long. I use a set of rabbit ears that I got for $9 at Lowes and typically pick up a dozen or so channels. about half of them are decent network tv in HD and the other half is crap.
the only thing that I miss is all of the espn stuff that plays on Saturdays...but that would not be nearly worth the effort and expense to set up anything more elaborate.

Any antenna with UHF-VHF reception will work. If the game is on CBS, you can see WAFB's antenna from the hayfield lot, very easy to get the signal.

Josh, I will throw a pro-tip your way: any antenna "can" work, but you have to spend some time with it to make it work reliably. Try a few different orientations and locations -- remember to re-scan your TV each time if there are channels missing. Get your antenna up high, not so much to try to get lots of signal, but instead to not have your carefully-tuned reception crash when Bubba drives by (or just walks by) at just the right spot and wrong time. Enjoy the great full-HD picture when it works well.

"HD" antenna is a scam. $9 rabbit ears from radio shack will get you HD tv. Powered antenna is a different story.

Get the powered signal amplifier for $20 and you will spend less time aiming your antenna.
