I'm guessing by fresh grads, he's referring to those people who have a few years of experience and not literally fresh grads. Something like 3 years of experience. Maybe not though.

Well, I don't know if my background is very attractive to business schools. I'm looking at career changes, and I'm wondering if an MBA can help me get there.

Yeah, that's bad advice. Get your MBA after a few years of work experience if you believe it really will help you towards your long term goal. People who get their MBA directly out of undergrad have no real world experience to share and relate to in the classroom. Everyone I know who got their MBA directly after undergrad did so because they couldn't find a job and panicked - and the job they got after business school was no better than what someone coming straight from undergrad could get. An MSF or other specialty masters program makes more sense immediately after undergrad.

I personally think hard work and perpetual networking without going back to school is the best thing you can do to continue to rise up on the path you're on. Only get your MBA if you feel like your career can be accelerated with an MBA -- and you can attend a school that provides a strong network related to the field you want to be in.

To me, an MBA is just a check in a box for later in your career. As long as the employer has heard of the school, it really doesn't matter. I would not recommend an online degree, however. The greatest value you get from a degree like this is networking. Period, point blank.

Thats just not true, there are plenty of top flight jobs you have NO shot at if you go to an LSU v a top 25 school.

Also like you said networking is key and if you go to a better school, the more successful you classmates and alumni will likely be.

Unless the schools in Houston use different descriptions, Executive is 10+ years experience and the Professional one is 2+ years.

Not at all. My roommate and my girlfriend are in MBA program now. She's a second year and she likes it. She went straight out of school because she was worried if she left then she wouldn't come back. It's lead to a lot of good things for her as far as career goes. She got a full time offer from EY after interning with them for a summer, and is currently interviewing with a lot of firms on the northshore and in New Orleans. She says they oversell the program a little bit as far as how nationally competitive it is, but she does well and it has definitely helped her out.

I hate to say it, but for kids your (and my) age, an undergrad degree is basically like a high school degree was in the 80s and 90s. So many kids go to college now, and it's become such common opinion that you have to go to college (stupid, imo), that you need something to set you apart.

Is it worth getting an LSU MBA at the in-state tuition cost or going out of state to a higher ranked program?

IMO, MBA programs provide more value after you've been working for a few years. You can approach the program with specific goals in mind.

In general, top 10 programs offer broader national/international networking opportunities. If you plan on staying in the area, LSU would be fine since the networking in an MBA program (especially an executive program)is as important as the education.

I personally don't see the value of anything but a top 25 mba, because if you went to a school someone has heard of you will have the same opportunity as those mbas outside the top 25 (within reason). An mba is great if you can up the prestige of your background and it will accelerate your career or you are looking to make a career change, because an mba can be used for a fresh start.

That is to say if you have 5-10 years real world working experience (degree required position obviously), an MBA likely will not improve your stock any.

It is something for fresh grads to even the playing field with real world experience needed for jobs.

I disagree with both points. An MBA without any work experience is useless. You aren't making the best use of the degree and frankly just throwing money away. If you are a fresh MBA with no prior work experience you will still be competing for the same entry level jobs and you won't get any 'MBA premium' in terms of your salary. Where as if you had some prior work experience and then you get your MBA, it is a different ball game.

If you get an MBA after working 3-5 years, it will open a lot more opportunities for you in terms of career/industry switching and career growth. Nobody should get an MBA without at least two years of work experience in my opinion.

Really not true. Only something like 25% of Americans actually GRADUATE with a 4 year degree. Finishing college is still a major deal.

I don't think so. Not to those who you "finish college for" at least. I feel like the general agreement among professional circles when you say "well he went to college" is the response of "and then what?"

Again - I think it's dumb that society places such an emphasis on going to college to begin with. It's not for everybody.

It is pointless...unless you bust your arse and get a 680+ GMAT score and get into a target school
