That is likely an annual number of new and renewed annual contracts. For example, a 5-year $20M grant would probably contribute to $4M to an annual figure.

ETA: from Dr. Dalton's email: "I am proud to share an extraordinary milestone for LSU’s flagship enterprise. For the first time in university history, LSU’s flagship research campuses collectively surpassed $600 million in annual research activity, reaching $601 million in FY 2024–2025."

What’s the ROI for Louisiana taxpayers? If it isn’t justifiable, shut it down…NOW..

It's a number to be proud of, but be aware that not every SEC school totals research the same.

For instance here, the LSU number that includes the NO medical campus and Shreveport would be the equivalent of Alabama including UAH and UAB (med school, the lion's share of the number). Texas usually does not include its satellite campuses and medical institutions either. If Texas did, the total runs something well into the billions IIRC. Other schools like Auburn do not have a med school, which yields a smaller number even though they do a good amount of research by non-med school standards.

Walk through Patrick F. Taylor and tell me why we need H1Bs to do all that when our own students & citizens need jobs and experience…the research is all BS. They care more about hiring “researchers” than actual educators. Kids should not struggle because they can’t understand the professor’s broken, shitty English. College is just a degree mill now because they need to pay these “researchers”

The research was on what happens when you lower admissions standards.

How much of that 601 million was siphoned off at the start for administrative costs to feed the beast, and never reached the actual researchers? 50 percent??

So, other than some professors and admins raking in OT $$$ WHAT did they find?

LSU's external research funding has definitely gone up in the last decade, but be skeptical about any announced amount. Dollars are often counted many times. Sometimes a dollar is counted when it comes in then counted again when it is spent. It's also common practice for each school sharing a coop grant to report the full amount rather than their cut. Research Offices can be very creative juggling books.

Interesting note in Advocate last week a LSU research auxiliary flunked an audit. Since the inadequate oversight started under Tate, I expect we will hear more about that unless the Gov's friends are involved.

Research is one of their new selling points. At every Spring orientation I recently attended with my child, they were constantly talking about how LSU is turning into a research campus. They made many comments about how they put students in research positions as soon as they can starting in Freshman year.

When an undergrad is hired by a researcher that is invaluable job experience. If that is a top researcher the student gets personal help with advanced education or job placement. Unfortunately, students seldom check to determine the "ranking" of the researchers. What's their record mentoring and placing student workers? Do they have competitive or non-competitive funding? Are they part of a career network that could be helpful to the student? Is their career tenuous or well established? A researcher educated in Indian universities may be brilliant, but will be less able to help with US grad schools and industry.
