BATON ROUGE WAS SAFE.. imagine that.

In the 70s we walked from the Past Time back to the campus at 2:00 AM and never thought anything about it.

Well, there were no admissions standards and the drinking age was 18. As a result most students failed out of LSU after their second semester.

Correct. If you were a LA resident that graduated from High School you were admitted to LSU regardless of grades and test scores. "Most" students didn't flunk out after 2 semesters, but many did. My best friend and I went to LSU after High School and were roommates in Power Dorm. He was asked to leave after 1 semester.

“Geez, hate to think what their reputation was back then…”

We tried for a different ranking list back then….

We often made playboys top party school list … i remember one year we fell off the list and it was big news.

Yep.. I partied myself to death and flunked out after 3 semesters. Worked full time at GODCHAUX'S for a year... Went back and buckled down and ended up with a Masters....
However, I would NOT change those first 3 semesters for anything. LSU in the 80's was insane. I had more fun than a person should be allowed to have. Good times (though I remember less than I should)

Chicks were thin, bush was bigger and the Brazilian had just come into play. Best of times. Bounced at Fred’s and Murphy’s.

My dad was there around that time. Said there was a bar White Horse - down Highland. Use to be a rule you couldn’t serve alcohol within 1 mile of campus, the White Horse was exactly one mile.

I started early early 90s. The LSU student union was a big high school hangout in the 80s though and it’s amazing what we did there. Smoked inside while shooting pool, bowling or playing ping-pong. Cigarette machines right there. Bought draught beer in yellow wax flower Dixie cups from the Union (same cups The Library used).

I was sneaking into Fred’s, Murphy’s, The Bengal, The Tiger, Sports etc at 16, with my friend’s LSU ID that didn’t even have a DOB in it. They’d let you in with a class schedule. Bayou, Library, Chimes and such never IDed me.

Different times. I don’t recall too many bad incidents. The occasional minor fight.

Went from 90 to 95. Drinking age was still 18. Had the time of my life. Lived in Chateau Kirby my first two years and it was a blast. Floor parties every Friday night and kegs every Thursday during the Spring semester. I wasn’t in a frat but many of my friends were so that led to even more shenanigans. Kirby had the biggest non-frat party every year during homecoming week which was the Kirby Smith bonfire. Most of campus attended that. Keg trucks, 20 garbage cans full of jungle juice, etc. Almost got arrested a couple times stealing pallets from industrial sites for the bonfire. Thinking back I don’t think we were in any danger of being arrested. I think the cops knew exactly what was going on and were just steering us to a safer location. Last 3 years (everybody was on the 5 year plan back then) I lived in Tigerland right behind The Tiger bar. It’s a miracle I graduated considering I was in The Tiger or Sports at least 5 nights a week. Football sucked but we had Shaq so basketball was good and the baseball team was elite. I wouldn’t trade those 5 years for anything.

White Horse

As op have said bars all around campus

You had four bars on highland by where the police station is now… white horse ( they just tore it down a few weeks ago… left bathroom structure) brass rail… Cotten club .. that entire area was shoulder to shoulder inside and outside on tgif.. .quarter bourbons etc… you went into bars to get drinks but so crowded everyone spilled out and packed street… one mile.. no.. we had the bayou and others on chimes… where cvs is was a strip mall where we had the long branch .. later murphys.. tiger land bars were considered far.. but packed.. faps and zachery then…you could by beer in the basement of one of the dorms .. it was a pool hall set up… drinking age was 18 so most freshmen could drink so everyone on and around campus could legally drink.. alcohol in rooms etc was no big deal..very large liquor store where cvs is now… as op have said you could drive or walk to a lot of these places and stumble home safely.. when bars closed ( 2 I think)
We would go across the bridge to places that stayed open all night..

You couldn't smoke in class, but you could in the hallways waiting for your class.

I was there from 1981 to 1985 and I do not remember smoking in the hallways being a thing. I’m not saying you’re wrong, just that I have no recollection of it.

I loved being in college so much, it only took me 8 years to finally graduate…

Started in the fall of ‘82, graduated in the spring of 90…
Sat out a few semesters, went part time a few semesters, but finally did it…

I was a Teke at Southeastern, but dated mostly LSU sorority girls..

South-seas was the shite…

I did 92 to 00, got a couple of degrees before I’d had enough. Good times.

KNLU was awesome. Plenty of cat. Alcohol and drugs both abundant and affordable. Monroe pretty small, should have moved to larger city sooner.
