It's quite shocking and I guess that was the point of the thread.
With our oldest, she had her eye on Georgia Tech the whole time. The process was easy and she only applied too State as a backup. She got early admit at Tech and we basically didn't even look at scholarships once Tech offered.
We're having more of a traditional search this time. The youngest has her strengths and will be an accounting major and she has one foot in the sorority house. Ole Miss and Arkansas are high on her list. While she follows the Bama Rush stuff closely on TikTok, she isn't interested in Alabama.

My youngest was admitted to LSU for Fall 2010 and she didn't get anything but saying she was eligible for student loans. High GPA but didn't test well on the ACT. She was also in a rebellious phase and decided not to go and attend the local Community College...
Cut to Spring 2011, she realized she needed to get out of Maryland because she was ending up in a going nowhere place. So I suggested we take a look at Southeastern. We went to Hammond and were offered a far better deal. As an out of state transfer, she got in-state tuition, a 500 per semester scholarship for 6 semesters, and ended up in a place that was supportive for her. She got into Nursing School there and graduated in Spring 2016...she knocked around several nursing jobs and is now working for LSU as a research nurse at the Pennington Center.

What did you think was going to happen. I wrote to the Reveille about it 25 years ago.
Typical Louisiana thinking, everyone cheering for “free,” not having any foresight at all.

My wife and I are both LSU graduates. My son had a 35 on his ACT, 17 college credits, was valedictorian with multiple AP classes and LSU offered nothing worthwhile. Ole Miss and Alabama offered multiple scholarships worth between $125K and $135K. Basically free college. We enjoyed our time at Ole Miss. He graduated with honors with a degree in Chemical Engineering. The whole process opened my eyes to just how little LSU cares about alumni and the best students in state. They cater to out of state students for their money.
So did you give him the option to go to LSU still? Or did you tell him you have to go where the money is bama or ole miss. I don’t want money to influence my child decision and want them to go where they want within reason

Sounds good in theory until you start really looking at the numbers. There are very few people that can turn down $100k more for affinity reasons. Awesome if they can!

He had offers from 10 universities that were all great, but he really didn't want to go the LSU. He still had great friends who went there and keeps in touch with them to this day. When he walked on the the campus at Mississippi for a tour in his Junior year of high school, he didn't want to like it. Thirty minutes into the tour I knew it was where he would go.

I get it…I added within reason. But I have no problem with them taking loans if necessary if they really wanted to go somewhere more expensive. I would pay on the interest while they are in college and help pay them back. I want my kids to be passionate about the college not just because it was free… we’ll see I’m a ways away to worry about it.

Very similar experience for my kid. Arky, A&M, Auburn and others offered full rides. Colorado and Illinois effectively waived OOS tuition. Bama offered full ride + money for books, fully funding a semester abroad AND a year of grad school (including Law). LSU offered $10K total.
My theory is that LSU doesn't have the financial resources to compete with other schools. For Texas kids, they may assume that most high-achievers - even those with ties to Louisiana or LSU alum parents - will just end up at A&M or UT Austin, so why bother.

That’s cool, that’s what I want for my kids. Wife and I both went to LSU. Oldest is lsu diehard now, but I don’t want him to feel like he has to go there. If he feels more at home somewhere else I will support 100% but not wearing a rebel shirt

It's certainly a fair assessment. But if LSU is offering $20k out of pocket and Ole Miss is offering a completely free ride, thats an $80k difference. Passion for a minor league NFL team isn't driving kids these days like it did us.

Living in TX now and try to steer my son away from LSU. Not actively, but don't want him to feel like he needs to go there because his mom and dad did. If I'm paying,it's not going to be for a meh school. There are better options that offer money. Bama offered a full ride to pull a friend's son away from A&M for engineering. And his parents were A&M grads. LSU just doesn't have the right mindset for that. It seems to just be a last resort school for kids around here. I recall admission getting tougher when I was there, and it climbed in the rankings a bit. But the '08 downturn did a number on the schools finances and I've not seen anything since that makes it seem worth the out of state prices.

So you're a graduate who made it out of this state, and now you want to send your kids back into the jaws of hell?! I'm an LSU alum who still unfortunately lives here and I've already informed the kids they can go to college anywhere EXCEPT for schools in Louisiana. One of the worst things you could do is allow them to grow roots here, to be employed here, etc.
If you're looking at the SEC, the only school NOT an upgrade over LSU is State.

If it was coupled with BR being an awesome town with tons of shite to do and it being safe, it would be one thing. But BR is none of these things.

That went away a while ago.
But I had the legacy scholarship. 3/4 of out of state tuition waved. After 1 year I received instate tuition. Just changed my address to my grandmother's.

I had saved money for him to go to either Ole Miss or State, but he’s got scholarship offers to Florida and Arkansas to be a placekicker.
That’s awesome. I thought schools didn’t give incoming freshman kickers scholarships. Congrats

It is true. Knew many who had excellent or perfect GPA/ACT/SAT scores and were offered little beyond TOPS. Would be better off going to ULL and being paid a stipend for the privilege.

Every football player will be on scholarship next year. Hell, I think every college athlete in the SEC will be on scholarship. Profit sharing is going to be nutty.
But the very top kids always got scholarship offers. He had 2 full SEC offers before his Jr year.
