Back when I was at LSU anyone with a high school diploma could get in. I was working for an English teacher who taught remedial English. She had football players in her class that could not read or write on a first grade level.

My son is a freshman in the honors college at LSU. In talking with different kids he learned that many did not meet the posted academic guidelines. In one of his corses he has to write a paper on the diversity of the honors college. His topic is “are we diversifying for the sake of diversity or are we ensuring diversity amongst like-like students”. Essentially, he’s stating that if there is a standard, all should be held to that standard regardless of color, sex, religion, etc. rather than lowering the standard to force diversity.

His professor and the dean of the college have voiced their displeasure over the topic. I’m proud to say, I’ve raised him right.

LSU's requirements to get in are already easy. If you need an exception to those, you clearly don't need to be in college.

There is nothing wrong with a 21 ACT and 2.9 GPA. It's not like those are anywhere close to failing scores.

Probably to fill some sort of diversity requirement.

I logged in to reply to this. I used to work for Enrollment Management and you are 100% spot on.

LSU can admit you on a probation exception or non-probation exception. I would imagine most students have a probation, meaning they must meet GPA and course requirements for a set period of time.

Bingo.

Yeah I agree for the most part. I think college is a scam unless you're majoring in a STEM curriculum. Some of the business type degrees can be useful too. If I could go back in time I'd probably be a carpenter or something.

Depends on your philosophy of what a university should be. If you think it should be a trade school, anything but STEM is a waste of time. Ideally the liberal arts teach you how to think critically (admittedly that's not always the case.) A lot of companies and other organizations are going to train you from the ground up anyway. Plenty of them recruit arts and sciences majors.

It’s all about the money. These unqualified kids will get federal pell grants or can borrow all they need. As far as LSU and every other college, bring in the money. Education doesn’t matter that’s why they push they social issues so much. They use words like diversity and inclusion but you’ll never hear education. It’s the money!

It saddens me to see so many bright private school kids going to BAMA over LSU. They are just offering the kids so much more

Alexander argued that these students may have dealt with personal trauma in high school or challenged themselves academically in ways that may not be reflected in their GPAs.

Out of state—-more money for out of state tuition. Dollars are driving the decision.
