It has the lowest population density of any county outside of Alaska. 669 square miles and less than 100 people. That's an area bigger than all of Livingston Parish. Damn, West Texas is desolate.

Edit: The estimated population as of 2021 is 57. LINK

The number of counties in the vast majority of states is way too high. Arizona does this right with only like 15.

Fun fact: Loving County is named after Oliver Loving, whom the Robert Duvall character in Lonesome Dove is based on.

If you've ever been, you'd understand why.

I always enjoy looking at a map of Texas.

The vast majority of sates have counties that are roughly the same size, not exactly, but close.

Then you have this huge area in SW Texas that has these massive sized counties.

It's like they were diving the state up to counties, and got to the last part, and were like F it we're tired, we will just make them huge.

Loving county is so small and isolated, it was the last place in the continental U.S. to report a Covid case. They didn’t have their first case until November/December of 2020.

Iowa has 99 counties because it was written into law that people had a right to be able to reach the county seat via horseback within the day.

It's a wonderful place to own oil royalties, though.

A lot of states, including Texas, adopted this policy in the 19th century. That’s why the state has so many counties.

I think the goal was to have the majority of a county‘s population within about a 15 mile radius of the county seat. A farmer could ride 15 miles into town in the morning to conduct business, and have enough time to ride 15 miles back home in the afternoon before sunset.

Arizona is a newer state, not admitted into the union until the early 20th century. By then more modern approaches were used in establishing counties.

Charlie Robison Loving County

great song

eta:

Well, I loved a girl
She lived out in Pecos, and pretty as she could be
And I worked the rigs on out in Odessa
To give her whatever she needs

But that girl, she run with an oil company bum
'Cause the diamond was not on her hand
And he left her soon 'neath the big loving moon
To go out and X-ray the land

Now I sit in my car at the New Rainbow Bar downtown
And the frost on the windshield shines toward the sky
Like a thousand tiny diamonds in the lights of Loving County

Well, l walked in that bar and I drank myself crazy
Thinking about her and that man
When in walked a woman, looking richer than sin
And ten years worth of work on her hand

Well, I followed her home and when she was alone
Well, I put my gun to her head
And I don't recall what happened next at all
But now that rich woman, she is dead

Now I drive down the highway
Ten miles from my sweet baby's arms
And the moon is so bright it don't look like night
And the diamond how it sparkles in the lights of Loving County

Georgia is the same way.

A lot of counties in the middle of Georgia(N-S) are around the same size. But the counties in E. & E.Central GA are bigger than the counties in the rest of the state.
