Louisiana taking another stab at making kratom illegal to appease Big Pharma

Louisiana is backwards in nearly every respect.

You just knew it would be some North Louisiana puritan - who by the way OWNS A PHARMACY. Can't have people treating pain or anxiety with non-pharmaceuticals.
We have to ban it to keep them safe from something that may have cause one total death ever! Meanwhile, go fill your Percocet scripts and down a few Bud Lights.

A bill set to criminalize kratom in Louisiana was passed several weeks ago.
The legislation, prompted by a Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) report and pushed through by state Rep. Chris Turner, R-Ruston, was passed unanimously by the Senate and the House and signed into law June 11 by Gov. John Bel Edwards.
Kratom will be banned under the act if the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) categorizes it as a Schedule I drug. The category, which includes drugs like heroin, ecstasy and peyote, indicates a lack of medical use and suggests a high potential for abuse.

“Kratom currently has no accepted medical uses,” it goes onto say. “Therefore, the Louisiana Department of Health recommends that kratom be banned from general consumption in the state, with exceptions made only in the context of well-designed scientific studies with appropriate oversight, data safety monitoring boards and regulatory approval.”
LDH spokeswoman Mindy Faciane told Gambit the decision was made with consumer well-being in mind. “The Louisiana Department of Health supports any efforts that help make Louisiana residents safer,” Faciane said.

If you insist.

Wtf? Both of these have legitimate therapeutic and spiritual uses? IIRC some psychologists/psychiatrists use MDMA to help treat disorders. I watched a documentary on it a while back.
Putting them in the same category as heroin is bupkis.

So what exactly is kratom?
Originating from a Southeast Asian evergreen tree, kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) leaves contain mitragynine and 7-a-hydroxymitragynine, organic compounds that target opioid receptors in the brain. It can be taken in capsule or powder form or brewed into a tea. There are several strains including Maeng Da, which is said to boost energy; Red Vein Kali, commonly taken for sedation; and Green Vein Kali, known to treat pain.
Although they work on the same receptors as opiates, they don’t have the same chemical properties.

I was actually in the House Criminal Justice Committee at the Capitol when Rep. Turner brought this bill. Three people testified in support of kratom, one of which was a North Carolina Representative that made some solid points. The other two were fidgety, babbling, stoners. Was not a good look overall for the kratom fan club.

Thanks.
So opioid-like but can be bought over the counter?

So you would prefer that a chemical that supposedly works on the opioid receptors in the brain and can be used as a sedative be completely unregulated and with no oversight into production or dosing? And the claims by said manufacturers not subject to any review or approval by the FDA...
Got it.
Got it.

Kratom is the shite the Arabs sell behind the counter in their gas stations.
I have never heard of any "healing" properties from this shite.

Yes, I do. Why don't you point out all of the dangers of it, maybe post the body count related to kratom consumption. I'll wait.

As a fellow pharmacist and owner, this is stupid as shite...kratom, while, not FDA approved for safety and efficacy, shouldnt be a schedule 1 drug...

The problem with most of the people arguing for the legalization of most mind altering substances is their presentation.
People don’t like the hear it but appearances matter. Especially if you’re arguing a “controversial” stance.
It’s one of the reasons David Duke was so popular, he didn’t look like the backwards, cousin-fricking, toothless red necks that comprise almost all of the KKK

Well, that's also kind of another thing. Supplements aren't subject to FDA adverse event reporting, so we have no way of knowing. You know what else they say in SE Asia that works great for a range of a ailments? Rhino horn and elephant tusk.
The whole point of the FDA review process is to make sure the shite actually does what we think it does and is not actually bad for you. And their claims are required to be supported by clinical evidence that stands up to peer review.

Well one would hope that elected legislators who are vested with significant power would be able to review actual documentation and not be swayed by the words of a few people. They are supposed to be more intelligent than just a common jury.

In 2017, the FDA reported 44 to 47 deaths related to kratom use, with one caused by “pure kratom.” The rest resulted from mixing other drugs with kratom, including fentanyl, diphenhydramine, caffeine, and morphine.

Do you also buy dick pills from gas stations? Real Kratom should NOT be bought at gas stations and yes it has a lot of positive properties #1 being pain relief. It amazes me that Louisiana just legalized medical marijuana but is trying to make another plant that helps so many get off of big pharmas pain killers illegal.
