Louisiana shrimpers fed up with imported shrimp

Louisiana shrimpers say their industry is in dire peril. They say rising diesel fuel costs, lax testing of imports, and most of all, competition from foreign imports are the culprits.
“There’s no room for us. We have cold storage that’s full of shrimp that we can’t get rid of because importers are coming in and selling so much cheaper than we can produce,” said Acy Cooper, president of the Louisiana Shrimp Association.
Cooper says this more than two billion pounds imported shrimp is coming into the United States, a number that keeps rising. He says an estimated 1.6 billion pounds of shrimp are consumed each year by Americans.
Cooper says the imported shrimp is not only bad for the economy, it is bad for consumers’ health. He cites a Consumer Reports study on shrimp safety:
“A study from 2015: Sixty percent coming into the United States has banned antibiotics and steroids in these shrimp. And you’re feeding the American public this trash,” said Cooper.
The federal government regulates seafood imports. Louisiana has a law requiring imported shrimp and crawfish to be labelled, but has no ability to stop the imports.
“We need our federal delegation to give us a hand here and help us,” Cooper said. “All our coastal communities are going to suffer and going to dissipate and disappear.”

I don’t know about y’all, but I refuse to buy any seafood that comes from Asian countries. Then you have dishonest distributors who put a Cajun sounding name on their packs of crawfish tails, but when you look closely, “Product of China”.
For me, any shrimp or crawfish I buy must come from a Gulf Coast State.

It’s not just Asian countries. Ecuador is a big exporter of shrimp.

I'm the same way, but the restaurant industry are the real shitheads in all of this.

Foreign shrimp usually taste pretty nasty. I always buy local.

Agree. They should be required to disclose the source of their seafood just like the grocery stores. If they have to charge an extra buck or two for U.S. sourced seafood dishes, fine. I’ll still buy over foreign, just like at the store.

I've read that it is cheaper to catch shrimp in the US, ship it to China for processing and ship it back here rather than process it in the US

I agree. I only buy Louisiana Gulf Coast shrimp. Be careful if it says “Gulf Caught”. Could be a Gulf in Asia.
Also buy seafood only from USA. Foreign countries have no where near the food safety regulations we have and it’s impossible to adequately inspect all the imports. What sucks is you have no idea what they are serving you in restaurants even if the menu says USA caught. Pretty much only eat seafood made at home.
Plus I think Louisiana Gulf shrimp taste the best. I’m happy to pay more per pound.

Capitalism. Drop your prices and the restaurants would love to serve domestic.

same, I'll always pay more for local seafood. I like to get my shrimp from the market in Westwego. Unless I'm just getting a pound or two then I'll go to a seafood store. Crawfish has to say product of US, which is usually nearly double the price of imported.

It's almost like an orange man warned about this sort of shite

It’s not always about taste. We ate at a restaurant in Biloxi that was serving shrimp from California. The reason given was that gulf shrimp cook down too much.
It felt like a bad excuse, but I was surprised to find that out.

What frustrates me is that I can’t find local shrimp or seafood in local grocery stores. I have to go to a specific seafood market to find it.
I’ll gladly pay a few dollars more per pound just annoying that to have to drive out of town to find it.

I was in Buras earlier this month and shrimpers were only getting a $1.25lb at the dock.. no matter the size

When are commercial fishermen not constantly fricking bitching and poor mouthing? It's all they frickin' do.
They've been doing this shite for decades. You'd think those whiny assholes would've learn to code by now.

The local seafood in Paka Malaysia was pretty good. Shrimp 4 to the pound were sliced in half and charcoal grilled with butter and garlic. Spicy Singapore crab was great. Fried snapper, etc. Washed down with great local beer. Sysco was not represented in the area. I will not go to an establishment that sources from Sysco .

This is true with pork.

They buy what’s cheap. Speaking of that, there are places where places like captain ds is the most popular restaurant.
Crazy.

Most imported shrimp taste like all the flavor has been sucked out of it and I refuse to buy it. I’ve had great luck with the Louisiana Select brand shrimp, fried shrimp poboys and shrimp dips taste like they are supposed to.

That's poor form by them.
