Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New Orleans LA
604 PM CST Mon Feb 8 2021

.AVIATION...Valid 090000Z-100600Z

MVFR cigs continue this evening across SE LA and Southern MS with
light scattered showers generally along and south of the tidal
lakes. VSBYS and Cigs will deteriorate through the evening and
into the overnight hours as abundant moisture and light to calm
winds allow IFR to LIFR conditions to develop. Conditions should
improve by mid morning. (JFL)

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 341 PM CST Mon Feb 8 2021/

SHORT TERM...
Clear and cool weather conditions today with winds remaining fairly
light. Dewpoints will begin their climb tonight and maintain in the
mid/low 60s through at least Thursday. Temperatures will follow suit
rising warmer than normal to the mid/low 70s. The dewpoints are
looking to rise well above the surface water temps. With this, the
main concern that may cause hazardous impacts in the short term is
some light/moderate sea fog advection starting late tonight and
lasting through Thursday. Increased moisture will allow for some
light showers tonight into Tuesday. There is a slight chance for
some thunder with this, however it looks like the most of it is
likely to occur offshore. Expect some occasional light/moderate fog
to affect most areas that are south of I-12 in LA and I-10 on the MS
coast. The next cold front should move through the area at some
point during the afternoon/evening on Thursday bringing rain chances
back up to 90%. /TDB/

LONG TERM...
Temperatures still trending above normal Thursday with rain chances
increased ahead the cold front. Isolated thunderstorms and
widespread showers expected to last through Friday morning before
clearing out.

Still not very confident in the forecast as it pertains to
temperatures this weekend. The GFS guidance is showing outrageously
freezing temps for the Friday to Sunday timeframe, but given the
trend of conditions this looks very unlikely. The Euro showed min
temps at or just below freezing for areas mainly north of the lake
so trended the temps closer to that.

No major changes were made to the forecast beyond the minor
adjustments to the max/min temps for the Friday-Sunday time frame.

According to our Accuweather, Saturday night is a low of 6 with a "feels like" of 18. A heat index in the middle of winter?

TWC - I know it’s not the NWS - has reintroduced freezing drizzle and snow showers into the forecast for me north of the St. Amant business district (Delaune’s Grocery/Delaune’s Do It Center/ Carl’s Computers/Family Dollar).

This would be peak laziness.

Sign on to a website just to ask someone else to sign on to another website to check the weather for them.

eta: the same info in the weather channel app is at weather.com

I still get a kick out of people getting irrationally mad that they name winter storms.

Don't! The warmth only lasts a few minutes and the cleanup is nasty and embarrassing.

I mean it is The Weather Channel, a television station that covers weather. They are in the ratings game. Weather is second. When the NWS starts naming them, I may bitch a little.

NWS Dallas Forecast Discussion ...

By the weekend, another strong push of cold air is forecast across
the Southern Plains, with the cold front arriving on Saturday.
Both the GFS and ECMWF show much below normal temperatures through
the weekend, but vary significantly with regards to just how cold
it gets. The GFS is much colder than the ECMWF and indicates
temperatures that would be among the coldest we have seen here in
decades. Specifically, the GFS is forecasting low temperatures by
Sunday morning to be near 0 F (and possibly even sub-zero near the
Red River). If this came to fruition, it would be the coldest
temperatures since the Arctic Outbreak of December 1989 (and the
coldest temperatures in North Texas in my lifetime!). The ECMWF is
not as cold, but still rather chilly. The ECMWF shows
temperatures on Sunday morning bottoming out in the upper teens to
lower 20s, which while still cold, is not quite as remarkable as
the GFS. The official forecast is colder than the ECMWF, but is
much warmer than the GFS`s extremely cold temperatures. It should
be stressed that while there is a wide range of possible outcomes
ranging from near 0 F to the mid 20s, either way, we are looking
to have the coldest temperatures of the winter so far by this
weekend and into early next week. Even in the warmer solutions,
precautions will need to be taken to protect people, plants, pets,
and pipes. Furthermore, additional rounds of frozen precipitation
will be possible with the initial cold front passage on Saturday,
then again by Monday as another upper-level shortwave trough
moves through. Right now, the models are all over the place with
regards to amounts, so the message for now is some amount of
frozen precipitation looks likely across the region on Saturday
and possibly again on Monday, but amounts are highly uncertain at
this time.

Nobody knows what to believe.
