turns out... there are DOTD cams there and you can view them at 511la.org

Can someone with more grooves in their brain explain why the temp is in the 20s and its still just sleeting and not snowing yet?

The snow line keeps nudging ever so slightly SE with each gfs run.
I’m in Iowa and it’s showing 2” of snow now with .25 of ice. Who knows how much sleet.

There’s a shallow layer of warm air above the surface and when snow falls through it it partially melts and then refreezes as sleet when it reenters cold air.

several hundred or even thousand feet above your head it's actually warmer and above freezing
snow melts in that layer... then refreezes when it gets into the freezing layer on the ground where you are
