money is being generated by LSP:

No.

That revenue is not coming from LSP. And a good bit of their operating costs are taken from DOTD funds at will.

Also, the state still has to put money back into the state retirement fund, which was raided years ago, and they haven't put one cent back on.

Shouldn't that money go towards that?

They can use their unit to go to and from work, and I believe they are allowed to make certain stops on days that they worked.

Higher Education might not directly fund its self but if you destroy higher education then you are hurting the state. The smart students will leave in even higher numbers and make homes elsewhere. Then you have a state that has very little home grown talent and businesses wont even look at coming.

first, higher ed wont be "destroyed". They won't get the full amount of cuts requested. They might get half of that. Regardless, higher ed will survive.
second, the idea that the smart students will go elsewhere is bullshite and always has been. Those who can go out of state will, regardless of higher ed's budget. The rest- smart or stupid- will go where they can afford to. As for making La. their home post graduation- that will depend on if they can find employment or not in the state.
The belief that a university will make people want to stay here or come here is propaganda put out by higher ed to keep/increase their funding. Quit drinking the koolaid.

I'm not in favor of raising many public sector salaries but I am in this case, they are long overdue. Like others have said, we need to adjust the absurd retirement plans that we are paying for and need to cut the under performing schools.

Seems untrue. I saw a state trooper that lives in my neighborhood stop at Oak Point on the way home (parked in the fire zone) and do some grocery shopping. His squad car is parked at his house every night.

It appears that they are writing more tickets in order to help pay their raises.

Besides, the public will be hit with more traffic tickets regardless. Anytime there is a shortfall in the budget, the LA State Tax Trooppers are sent out in force to increase revenues.

it wont be destroyed but it will be hurt. One part is the stupid idea that all colleges should have cuts instead of making the useless ones go away. Second inside the college not many of the balls to tell useless majors they are gone.

If you harm a strong program with cuts, then you possibly lose ground to out of state colleges that have a program just as good. Some of the smart students will stay but others will go and they might not return.

A business will certainly take into account education in deciding where to open offices. If i know i can get home grown talent that is a major plus. Also knowing that the state you are in has good programs can help bring in better employees.

I doubt the state cuts 300 million, but it is stupid to only cut higher ed. LA has far too many stupid untouchables than it should. Jindal just has zero fricking back bone to fix the real problems.

yet Jindal doesn't have the balls to say they should be cut. IMO most of the satellite campuses should be shut down.

you cut higher ed....you will have less intelligent people...people with less education have a higher propensity to perform a crime...thus you will need more police

obviously im being sarcastic but i think some common ground could be made....instead of 20% maybe 10%?

Do you work for DPS? Because if you do, you know good and well that the statement about no raises since 2010 is false. They have received merit increases when other departments could not afford to give merits. They also were able to promote, even when a hiring freeze only allowed promotion within certain circumstances.

They should be paid, don't get me wrong, but not when the state is having budget shortfalls.

Since you have a cop hating agenda, no matter what the thread is about, I don't see how you can think anyone on this website is suppose to take you seriously.

Louisiana State Police says the raise is well over due, especially when comparing their current salary to departments like Gonzales that start pay at about $44,000 a year. But departments like Baton Rouge that start pay around $31,000 a year complain it puts them at a disadvantage, especially when it comes to recruiting new officers

Seems about right, I see the same 5 or 6 sitting in the median on 20 shooting the shite every morning in their Tahoes - they park perfectly so they can let the engines run and roll the windows down to talk, and they had 2 full time directing traffic at the new Dairy Queen in West Monroe.

this will likely happen anyway. What about the smart students who will leave regardless?

this is all true, but its more likely a business or individual will look at tax rates, quality of life, primary schools, crime rate, etc. before they worry about how the state funds it higher ed.

I'm all for cutting budgets across the board. But there has to be a priority. My point is, given the current fiscal "chrisis", funding higher ed at the current levels is a luxury we can no longer afford. Its nothing personal- we just don't have the money.

I have no problem with cuts to higher ed as long as they are the correct ones. The issue is they wont make the correct cuts. It is also extremely stupid of LA to always look to cut higher ed when program after program should be chopped. The short term pain of making the right choice scares politicians.

Even inside of the actual colleges i don't believe many will make the correct cuts. The higher ups are more worried about not taking backlash than saying a major is being deleted.

Why not 3-4% like the rest of us that may get a cost of living increase yearly, usually not every year.
