We just returned from family beach trip to Fort Morgan today. My daughter called after they arrived home to let us know their little Molly had passed while we were gone. She was 8 same age as her son. He and her 3 y/o daughter were both devastated. We have no idea what happened. She is an inside puppy but does stay outside during the day when everyone is at work. It hasn’t been hot. She had a covered back patio for shelter and also my SIL has a doggy door built into his separate shop that she can go in. His sister was stopping by each day to make sure she was fed and had fresh water. She had not previously shown any signs of sickness nor was there any signs of trama where maybe another animal hurt her. She was a great family member and I hate my daughter and two grandchildren are having to deal with her loss.
Dachshunds make great family pets. Very protective of their family and great lapdogs. Here was mine below. She lived to be 13. A red tailed hawk got her one day while playing in the backyard. I had her since birth and she was like my third child. I cried like a baby when the vet put her down. Hawk had just done too much damage and vet didn’t think she would survive the surgery or healing process due to her age. She was suffering so bad that I just wanted it to be over for her.

Damn man, sorry to hear it. I wonder if maybe it was a snake bite?

I'm sorry...
Beautiful pups, look like very sweet girls.

Thats what I was thinking. 8 years old is prime age for one of these dogs.
Very sorry OP.

Sorry to hear that, only bad thing about pets is that they don't last long enough
I have found it is better to experience them than to avoid it.
It sounds like she no doubt had a good life, should have been longer.

I mentioned this to my SIL. There is a large creek that runs directly needing their house. It is fenced with a chainlink fence and gate so she couldn’t have gone the creek side but a cottonmouth could have come up into yard. Or maybe a copperhead? He checked her over pretty thoroughly and said he couldn’t see any bite marks but being that she was a long haired he couldn’t have missed it. He said he was going to check every inch of back yard just in case before the kids could go out and play again.
Only other thing would be maybe a neighbor poisoned her. I couldn’t imagine why though. His from fence and side fences are 6ft cedar so she wasn’t really visible to the neighbors.
And the dog never hardly ever barked so she really wasn’t a nuisance. He gets along with his neighbors on either side really well and they both have permanent outside dogs so we couldn’t really imagine either of them doing it.

I need to find a pic of the night our doxie mixed it up with a badger. This doxie was about a 25 pound freak of solid muscle. His ear was clawed up pretty good but the badger was tore up too. Condolences on the loss, they are family.
