Los Angeles City Council moves forward with plan to replace police officers with community-based responders for nonviolent calls
(CNN)The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a measure to develop an unarmed model of crisis response that would replace police officers with community-based responders for nonviolent calls.
"This is the dawn of a new era of public safety in Los Angeles," City Councilmember Herb Wesson Jr. tweeted Tuesday.
Nonviolent calls for service that police officers typically respond to include mental health crises, substance abuse and neighbor disputes.
The move to replace some police with trained crisis responders is one component of the movement. Supporters of defunding police -- either abolishing police entirely or shrinking their departments' budgets and reinvesting those funds in education or housing -- believe that unarmed workers trained to deescalate violence could better serve some community members.

All of these can, and very regularly do, become violent.
How long until the first social worker is killed on the job?

In LA County? Vegas oddsmakers would start the line at 2.5 days

May as well move forward with a plan to replace the lost tax revenue from tourists avoiding that city en masse.

Yep, it's going to happen, and often

This is where I really want to see this experiment play out.
L.A., specifically South Central L.A. has already seen the effect of a diminished police presence. Do they really want to go through this again?

I am guessing within the first week.

And then what will they do?
This should be entertaining to say the least

Lol good.
Let all of those self righteous, hypocritical, white liberals enjoy the politics they created (and claim to support on camera) while hiding in their mansions in the hills. frickin fools.

I will give an example:
In a recent scanner call I heard, a call came in that checked all three of these boxes. A 15 year old boy with prior mental issues and a drug problem was in an argument with a family member.
The initial call came in as a Domestic Disturbance. The police were dispatched.
Prior to the officer arriving on the scene, the situation had devolved into the 15 year old arming himself with a knife and cutting or stabbing a family member.
The second call came in less than 5 minutes after the first and the officer was on the scene a few minutes later. No social worker was going to handle that volatile situation.

Besides Big Lee, how many neighbor disputes are there where LA council members would believe that the cops just show up and go Rambo on everyone? These social work types will just show up to these disputes like a mix between Paul Blart mall cop and Screech from Saved by the Bell.

The thing is, this move isn't defunding a police force. This is a decision that will likely only impact those who are already most likely to come into contact with police. Those poor people with drug problems who live in the shite neighborhoods.
IF, and that is a damn near impossible if, everything goes perfectly, it would work. However, as soon as shite goes sideways, people will start screaming that real police should have been there. They will want to know why a social worker was sent to deal with their 15 year old, violent, schizophrenic son and not an actual officer who could have stopped him from killing his family member.
