In the case of the specific bribery charges, I'd imagine the federal government is the victim. I'm not a lawyer, but it all seems pretty clear to me.

I'm not sure why people are questioning the charges. Loughlin fricked up big time here. She also rejected a plea deal back in April before these new charges even came around. Another frick up.

This when I tip bar tender and get free drink is it a crime? I know not material.

That’s not bribery, but the bartender is committing a crime, he’s stealing from his employer.

If colleges didn’t have affirmative action when it comes to enrollment, we wouldn’t be talking about this.

Tax issue clearly an issue

Why are more charges getting added though? I hate legal system charge the crimes and don't get butt hurt if defendant decides to fight charges

There was more then just paying brines to get here daughters into USC. I read that she got her daughter a special needs test for ACT/SAT and that she was only one in room with the proctor. And that proctor was in on the scam and changed answers to boost her scores.

She’s a hot white woman with a hot white daughter. OT hard leggers can’t fathom it and want answers!

Guess you could argue she got in over someone else or USC was damaged?

If you're a parent who tosses your child to the fate of chance and whims of college admissions boards instead of leveraging power and connections you spent a lifetime accumulating you never loved your kid in the first place.

USC and other applicants are the victim. Ask any parent whose child has gone through this process. Of course I will add the system is being gamed from both ends. One example is a kid I kniw who applied as thr child of a single mom who lives on a teacher's income. Mom and dad are together and never married so there is no record of child support and they file taxes separately. Overpriced coaches know how to gsme the system.

I will note that my son is at USC and I did not pay $500,000.

Going for jailtime for this victimless crime is retarded.

Have them pay fines and "sponsor" a kid whose spot their kid supposedly took.

What is the point of filling a prison slot with these people?

1) She knowingly hired a guy who ran a company that got kids into college. For the right amount of money, he would flat make shite up about a kid. He'd do stuff like fabricate an athletic record for some third tier sport out of thin air. He'd also lie to get preferential treatment for these kids on standardized entrance exams to boost their scores. That's fraud.
2) This guy would then, in turn, give thousand dollar handshakes to coaches he was connected to on the inside who coached those third tier sports. The coaches had admission spots for the team and they'd take the false information and run with it to get the kid admitted to the school on the sports team. That's fraud and bribery.
3) The kid would then invariably have a career ending injury or lose passion for the game or find some other reason to leave the team, but would remain enrolled at the school. More fraud.
4) Because federal dollars are used at these schools and you fill out things like the FAFSA, that fraud becomes a federal crime.
5) Lori Loughlin went above and beyond the fraud and claimed the hundreds of thousands of dollars she paid to the guy and his organization on her taxes as a charitable donation. That's money laundering and tax evasion.

No matter how many times we explain it, the OT will still say "This is dumb and I don't understand why it's illegal to pay to get your kid into college." because the OT is too fricking stupid to understand that's not what happened and these people aren't being prosecuted for giving money to a school for preferential treatment.

It is not illegal to buy USC a building to get your stupid kid in. The OT's parents are probably going to need to buy 3 or 4, though.

Hell, under your strict definitions, it’s outright bribery to give a barista some cash for a cup of coffee he gives to someone else.

It’s the same thing just with less money.
