I would look at DJI's Mini series. I have a DJI Mini 2 and love it. I had never flown a drone before getting it, and it has been easy to use. I watched a good YouTube video about it for beginners before using it, and then I was good to go.

Now, if your son is still pretty young, you may want to go a different direction. These are good quality drones. Even if you go a different direction, DJI might be something to look at if he wants to step up another level in the future.

Get a DJI mini of some type.

$300 may be tough for a new one, but you could probably find a used in that range.

The FAA website makes it sound easier to license a nuclear reactor than to legally fly a drone.

I have the DJI Mini SE and that is in the price range you are looking for. Everyone that has seen its capabilities has been really impressed. It is quick to deploy is incredibly stable even in wind. Fastest I have gotten it up to in sport mode is 30mph and the furthest I have flown it without losing transmission is 3000’ away. Usually keeps video feed out to 2400’ no problem. Batteries last 30minutes or so. I let my almost 4yr old fly it while he is sitting in my lap and he landed it twice by himself and took off. I highly recommend it. I ended up buying a case and two extra batteries and charging dock as well.

Can't remember, but the mini 2 was a big step up.
