looking at getting a pool at the house

would be in the next 12 months or so. kids are getting big enough and they are fish 6 months a year. wife is a teacher and stays home all summer and lives at the gym pool. thinking it would be a good choice.
curious on the following:
- I guess first question is if you have one ,do you recommend?
- How is the maintenance? ive heard water and electric bills can get crazy
- whats the ballpark price for a decent pool, nothing crazy?- 40-50k? Looking for a lagoon style, hot tub not a must
- im assuming salt water is the trendy thing now?
- do most people take a separate loan out or just add it to the mortgage?
any tips or recommendations are appreciated. literally dont know a thing about pools. TIA

I have friends with pools. They are a pain. Good luck.

I put one in last year. Easiest way to finance is through a HELOC. I already had one so I just added the pool onto the line of credit. How much you're going to pay is really going to depend on the finishes. If you want a natural stone deck and water features, those things are going to cost you. Also, a rectangle pool will set you back less than lagoon style. Definitely do salt. It's much easier to maintain.
Mine is a small cocktail pool measuring 8x20 with a hot tub. It cost me about 40k. I would expect to it at least that much for something bigger. Oh, and pick your contractor carefully because they can be a bitch to deal with.

Do you recommend
No, use a friends pool or gym pool

How's the maintenance
Expensive and time consuming

Price for pool
40-50k, plus yearly maintenance.. About $2500/year
Bottom line.... A pool is like a boat. It's better to use your friend's pool

how much has your water and electric bill gone up?
i dont want this to be like people with a boat talk about- thats its more of a pain in the arse then it is something to enjoy

Water bill increase is negligible. The electricity went up maybe 20 bucks a month. It will be more for a bigger pool because you will have to run the pumps longer and harder.
I forgot to mention that I have no regrets getting it. We use it almost daily over the summer and weekly through the winter. It has made for some great family time.

I hated my pool. If a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into, a pool is a hole on land that you pour money (and water) into.

yeah thats the thing, almost everyone i know that has one swears by it. talked to a coworker yesterday and he has a small salt water lagoon style and said its very low maintenance and they are in it 5-6 days a week.
i just dont want to be cleaning it every day and paying $100+ a month in maintenance.

this is false. and especially false if you do lagoon with natural stone deck and water features.

Chemicals for a saltwater pool are maybe only 200 per year. If you maintain it yourself it will take on average 45 minutes per week. It will only get expensive when things start to break.

I would recommend. Moved into house with pool last summer and haven't regretted yet. Usually 40-50 bucks a month in chemicals during summer, occasionally a little more depending on what water is doing and rain. Rarely spend much time cleaning it. Just drop some chlorine in every other day or so and other chemicals occasionally. Test chemical levels once every week or two.

If you have the money get a pool. A lot of poors posting here. Having a pool at home is a must with kids in the summer. Hell, my babysitter and her college friends used it the whole week we were outta town. I have cameras everywhere and in the pool house

You going to need a camera when the wife is messing with the pool guy.

Not a single thing in your post was accurate.
That's pretty good, even by OT standards
