Looking at an Eclipse is 20-100x safer than looking at a normal sun

I'm tired of the propoganda that it's dangerous to look at an eclipse. BS, I raw dogged and stared straight at it in 2017. My area has 95% of sun covered by moon. What that means is only 5% of sun will be exposed, 5% of rays. What that means is that 1/(.05) or 20 times safer to look at an eclipse where I am compared to just looking at a regular sun because it'll have 1/20th the rays. If your sun is 99% covered by the moon, that means it is 100x safer to look at that eclipse than a normal sun because it'll have 1/100th the rays.

If my logic is off, please correct me; but I just think that looking straight at the moon does no harm at all. Never has been. Sun is only damaging part and only 0-5% of it will be showing in this region. Not like the Sun being behind the moon makes the outter exposed rays anymore dangerous than regular rays.

It may be like sound. I believe a human can withstand 80 decibels way more than 2x the amount of time they can withstand 160 decibels. Maybe you can look at it indefinitely and get no damage.

Same idiots who warn you every year that you can't run a generator inside your house. I've done it plenty of times

Yup. It's pretty insane to see it with the naked eye. I took this photo of the 2017 eclipse with my android phone. I think the government doesn't want people to look because it's actually an experiment to try and slow global warming.

True, but people aren't dumb enough to stare at the full sun. Well, they are but it is difficult to do.

Yeah that's not even remotely the same as looking at an eclipse. To equate the two makes me believe that you actually do run a generator in your house.

You can’t even see a partial social eclipse with the naked eye so all you’re doing is staring into the sun like it’s a normal day. People think an eclipse is some magical thing that damages your eyes. No… it’s because you stared into the sun when it’s how it looks on any normal day.

The problem is YOU CAN stare at the sun due to the eclipse.

Go stare directly at a normal sunny day, your eyes start to melt, water and shut in 2 seconds. You can’t hold them open long enough.

Because the eclipse is 20x less bright, you’re able to stare at it longer thus getting direct sunlight in portions of your eye for extended periods of time….causing damage.

Yep, just like those who say don't light a charcoal grill inside. Those New Orleans hotel room bathtubs work great for charcoal grilling chicken wings and ribs.

This is like saying getting hit by a car going 50 is safer than one going 100.

You aren’t wrong but you are probably still fricked up.

You didn't answer the question though.

How safe is it? Can I stare at it for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, an hour? What are the effects if I do so?

If I enter a room that is 5% chlorine gas, and I wear a gas mask that makes it 100x safer, I'll still be dead in 30 minutes.

Playing russian roulette with just 1 bullet is 1-6x safer than playing with a full cylinder.

I mean we've all stared at the sun as a kid. You might be able to handle 3-4 seconds of it normally, look down for a minute, then look 3-4 seconds again. I'll test it out. May not be one of those things because there's 20x less rays that I can look at for 4 x 20 = 80 seconds. Might not be proportional and that you can look indefinitely.

Like decibels. I think you can be under 80 decibels for well over 2x the amount of time as 160 decibels. I'll give field reports.

Trump looked at it last time and he's better than ever.
