EBR closed tomorrow

My kids' school follows EBR and it's fricking maddening that they look for excuses to close. Can we at least wait to see if there is actual ice on the roads before a decision is made?

The precip, if we get any, will be later this evening or overnight.

The days of school getting canceled at 5:30 am before the bus routes started is over, for better or worse.

Tons of parishes announced in the same 30/45 minute timeframe, so it’s safe to say that it was a centralized decision.

I just got a text saying my kids school is closed tomorrow. This is a BR Catholic high school so I’m guessing the closings for others will start to go out.

agree, so plan a late start at 9:30, if all is well great, if it is icy roads then cancel for the day, they have no problem letting school out early for some wind and clouds, why not late for cold weather?

Meanwhile, people like you will also bitch about last minute closures. 42000 students in EBR, 5000 employees. Many employees live in surrounding parishes, meaning commuting in adverse conditions and dealing with school closures at home. EBR should always close early, if necessary.

That's the problem. There is a damn good chance nothing happens and many of us still have to take off work and stay home with kids b/c of the possibility of precipitation.

We have more technology than ever. With the push of a button, school districts can let everyone know. Schools managed to handle things properly 30+ years ago without email, text, and emergency notification systems.

Of course. They were all waiting on one person to make the call so they could follow.

You’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Parents complained about the district I worked in not calling it until 5:30 because they couldn’t “be prepared”. Then the district made an effort to call it the night before and people bitched if the forecast changed.

Now they’re doing NTI on days they have to call in-person school for weather and parents are bitching about that.

May as well do what you think is best for your district staff and employees at this point since it apparently doesn’t matter what you do.

Ever heard of black ice? It's quite dangerous and we're not accustomed to it down here nor equipped to deal with it.

When schools wait until the last minute to cancel, it puts parents in a bind as they need to figure out what to do with their younger kids.

It's much better to tell parents the night before, so they can plan, then it is at 6 am to say hey instead of a 9 am arrival time, it is now closed all day.

Driving back from College Station right now. Left around 6am and everything was covered in ice. If we get anything like that tomorrow, schools will be cancelled for sure

It looks like St Bernard will avoid icy roads tomorrow morning.

However, we have a lot of teachers who live on the north shore and who commute every day down here (mainly older teachers who didn't want to live here after Katrina but still wanted to work here to keep seniority).

So far, they have announced that all after-school activities tomrrow will be cancelled, but school will occur.

But there is a real concern that a lot of teachers might not make it in tomorrow morning.

More probably, they were all on the same weather conference call.
