Putting aside the horror of the possibility of such an unsettling situation, I think you are correct it generally has to happen based upon behavior. Most White People don't want to even engage the melanin enriched much less get the publicity associated with the engagement. The word for most only comes to mind when the behavior prompts the identification.

There is this weird human behavior called “ unprovoked “ behavior. Sometimes a guy just sees a guy and insults him for no other reason than he’s a defective individual who fails at life.

Last night I was playing Fortnite with my 9 yr old. (Yes, I’m a 50 yr old white dude that enjoys playing video games with his son, sue me.). Anyway, this kid, sounded to be a 10-12 yr old white kid is rapping into his microphone loudly. I couldn’t hear my own game because this little fart thinks he’s Kodak Black. I ask him politely, “Hey dude, do you mind muting your mike, I can’t hear the game.”
Response: “ frick you nnnnnn, I do what da frick I want nnnnnn!” I was called an effing nnnnnnn a few more times before I was able to mute him.
Point is, if a 50 yr old white bread like me will be called a nnnnnn, your son definitely will, doesn’t matter what kind of skin he has.

Disappointed in many responses here.
I don't care what blacks call other blacks, it doesn't make this any more acceptable. This young girl does not deserve a racial slur.
Next time that kid on the bus arguing with her needs to just call her a bitch. The bus driver has to stay professional though, but I wasn't there.

exactly.... the whataboutism of it's use in the black community should have absolutely NO BEARING, whatsoever, for it's use outside of that community... it's a word said by immature, ignorant people, indiscriminate of their skin color...
yes, its just a word... but the bigger factor is the true character of the person that is exemplified, when a slur like that is used... same with any racial slur...

I’d simply pick any of the top 50 rap songs and sing it.
What are they gonna do? Get pissed at me for singing the lyrics to a song? Don’t want me to sing the lyrics, don’t make them part of the song.

I might be indulging a little bit here but I'm thinking that is what the bus driver was asking the girl. I'm genuinely thinking the bus driver didn't mean any ill intentions, just was trying to get to the bottom of what happened between the 2 students riding her bus.

Lyric then went home and listened to gangsta rap where the N word was repeated at least 12 dozen times followed by women being bitches.
