Just to play devil’s advocate… If the tickets they sell then get resold on the secondary market for much higher, then they are actually underpriced Why should secondary market sellers be making money? That said, frick paying more

They should be able to sell them for whatever they want, unless of course they’re a monopoly.

They own the venues and force the hand of the artists, they basically have no choice. Pearl Jam tried years ago.

Tell your wives to stop buying Taylor Swift tickets at ridiculous prices. But, as long as there is someone else willing to pay the price, it's basic supply and demand curves.

The fact that such a robust secondary market exists for many shows is evidence that concert tickets are underpriced, relative to what many are willing to pay.

This was the easiest “early life” prediction I’ve ever had.

I say this as somebody extremely against anti-semitism.

Concerts are a thing of the past for me. I refuse to pay the ridiculous prices when I can just watch the concert on youtube for free and not deal with traffic, lines, expensive concessions, and mostly Ticketmaster.

Although I do enjoy live music often in bars

They aren't.

If tickets to events are being sold out in a matter of minutes or hours and then are being resold en masse at massive profits, original prices are not high enough. The public has proven that it they are willing to pay much more time and time again.

I enjoyed sports and concerts in my 20s and early 30s, but kids were too young for most of it. In my late 30s and 40 they wanted ALL the live events and I hated every second of it.

From about 18-35 I did about 3-4 concerts and maybe 10 live sports. It was enough.

That’s about when my tolerance for the crowds ended.

Since then (7 years) I’ve done 15 concerts and about 30+ sporting events. What doesn’t help is that my boss has spurs courtside tickets, one of my best friends has extra tickets for every Baylor game and a good bit of A&M’s and my kids don’t mind getting me to ask about them. Then the kids also learned about following musicians touring schedules.

To their credit, they do pay for most of their tickets themselves, but I do have to take them there and friends usually.

Thats only half of the equation, though.

You’re only looking at the demand side - how much the consumer is willing to spend. Yeah, the demand is clearly inelastic (at least in the current pricing range). But for normal supply & demand economics to work, you need competition on the supply side as well.

There isn’t (real) competition on the supply side. It’s been monopolized by Live Nation / Ticketmaster. If demand is inelastic, the price is determined by the supply curve. If demand is inelastic and one firm owns all of the supply, the supply curve can be whatever that firm wants it to be.

So.. sure, he’s not wrong. In a market where Live Nation / Ticketmaster owns all of the supply, the price probably should be higher. But that’s kind of the point.

I miss the good old days when tickets were 10 bucks. If weed was your thing, you only had to inhale because it was everywhere.

I don’t go to concerts anymore. Higher prices will mean I don’t go to concerts anymore.

Yep. I'm a big RHCP fan. Saw them perform in Vegas a couple of years back. I will never go to another stadium venue, and I had decent seats. Forced to see what was going on, on the stage, by watching the video screen and at the mercy of a camera man.
