Well, when there isn't a draft, teams get stacked and a couple of teams have fun beating the shite out of the other teams all season. I got to experience both ends of that spectrum. Made my best friends while playing on the shitty teams, though. Bonds formed through struggle or something like that.

i guess you never coached...around here, for baseball and girls softball, coaches draft their team starting when the kids are 7 years old.

Yeah it's pretty obvious who's has coached and who hasn't and who lives in one horse towns vs cities with a population over 10k people.

That's why you play travel ball. We stack our 6 year old team, practice 6 days a week, play 36 tournaments a year and crush the hearts of the little maggots on opposing teams.

Exactly

Most fun I had playing baseball growing up was on my 6th grade rec league team that won one game all season. One. Out of like 25-30 games.

I was the only player on the team who was any good and the only one picked for the all star team. I was the best pitcher, best hitter, etc. We didn't win a game until the playoffs so we lost our first 25 games of the year. Yet I still had a blast anyway. My friends teams all beat the crap out of us sometimes but we all had fun anyway.

Exactly. I guess the rules have changed since my coaching day. Back then, once the draft was done, it was done. No trading players or deciding to play up. Either they played on the team that drafted them or they didn't play. Period.

. As I recall, Kuhn declared Billy Jr. ineligible for the draft as a result of Dr. Cannon's shenanigans.
Sounds like something a draft able kid would want, free agency

You thank that's bad we had a parent and a coach sign his son up under his middle name so he could go unknown through the draft.

I coach rec ball and this year we had a blind draft for 9-10 year olds but i know some shady crap went down. I don't really care. shite, I don't even have a kid on the team i coach.

Glad they did a blind draft.

Why do they have to go back in the draft ?

That's dumb

My 10 yr old is playing his sixth year on the same team

our draft had notes besides kids names that mentioned that the wanted to play with their friends. We all made sure to keep kids that wanted to play with other kids together.

How miserable would it be for best friends that want to play with each other to not be able to be on the same team.
These are little boys. Let em have fun.

Wtf. These are 7 & 8 year olds. A good number of them won't even play in middle or high school. Just let the kids play on the same team as their friends and call it a day. Drafting them and having random adult coaches fighting over 8 year olds is absurd

I haven't read any of this thread, but I will say this. The league I coach in (7&8 girls) they do a redraft every year. My daughter played up as a 6 year old (mainly because the tball product is garbage, not trying to brag about her skill here) but my wife and I made some special friendships last year. My wife still goes to dinner with two moms a couple times a month. I brought up this year to keep the teams together. How can you build relationships with the players and parents if there is a redraft every year? That is my issue with drafts every year. Not even sure if OP is in the same situation but wanted to throw my two cents in.

Also, the number one problem with youth sports is and has always been parents. I bring up the Matheny Manifesto at my first team meeting every year and hope each of my parents read it.

They did a draft when I played in the under 12 league. That was longer ago than I'd like to admit. I think the players can opt to stay on the same team every year and most of them did.

Whatever happened to just randomly assigning kids to teams?
