Looking at stuff for fun around the house. Of my kids that are still at home, my youngest son (12) is well trained with firearms but we don't get to shoot as much as we'd like. Browsing Amazon for crossbows, I saw the little hand held $29 crossbows with 80lb. draw. Toys, right? But the 80lb. draw was a little alarming at first. I opted for the PSE Viper SS, retail $39.99 direct from PSE, and still figured for $39 it may be just a fun "toy", for home, right?

NOT A TOY! If you haven't tried one, I highly recommend everyone grab one of these while still legal. I got a 60 pack of the "Frenzy" model bolts which will give you velocity of 215fps!!! These things are silent, shoot in your back yard or if you have a room big enough, set up an indoor range. I have everything from .22's to AR15's and I can't image anything this much fun (and lethal) that can still be bought by mail, and under $50!! I you haven't already, just get one!!

It has decent length a rail, my eyes aren't the best but I'm guessing it's a Weaver rail. Anyway, I've got a Red Dot Scope on the way for this one.

Can it pierce any skull or just a zombie skull that is already in the process of deterioration?

LOL, I haven't tried a simulated skull but my guess from what I've seen so far, I don't think it would break through a human skull at 50 ft but think there would be a good chance to get an in or two penetration if 20 ft. or closer. Chest area and abdomen is a different story. I think it would easy clear the epidermis level and on into softer tissue with a body shot for sure,.

And the PSE website has it for $39, Amazon is $47 I believe. But comes with three bolts (arrows). Get plenty of extras because they are easy to loose outdoors in the leaves and grass.

Make sure you search "hand held" because there is a PSE Viper full size as well.

Yeah, 80lb draw strength seems like it would put a hole through someone.

Think it's a targeted marketing campaign? Would make sense. TD is a relatively small site, but I imagine the demographic is right up the alley of something like this.

And seriously ya'll, be careful. The directions aren't the best and the safety is not explained. After I assembled I thought the trigger assembly was stuck until I figured out that one, it will not dry shoot and a bolt must be pressed back firmly, and two, the little red safetey switch has two sections... one up-down that releases the rear stock for auto-cocking the bow string, and two the front section of the red safety (in-out) must be pressed in, in the forward position to fire. Pull the switch out on the bow is supposedly "safe". There was also a gray area as to the location of the two plates that go in front of and behind the bow limb when fastening to the pistol itself. A little common sense finally told me the metal side and section had to go against the set screw that tightens in place. Assembly otherwise would be a 2-3 minute ordeal if instructions would have been more clear.

But be careful regardless, this thing is not a long range threat and probably not very effective after 15 - 20 yds. But inside of 30 feet it could really mess someone up if critically placed. 215 feet per second is a deadly projectile at closer ranges. The fact that it is virtually silent compared to firearms, plus small compared to compound bows and crossbows, gives this think a lot of covert potential in certain circumstances. I just hope the gun alarmists don't start bringing their protests to these as well. Properly supervised it's a great tool to teach a child to handle a weapon, learn appropriate respect, and a healthy fear of foolish handling.
