I notice that people who habitually use “literally” in conversation are either unsure of the facts in their statements, or they are purposefully exaggerating.

b —used to emphasize the truth and accuracy of a statement or description The party was attended by literally hundreds of people.
c : with exact equivalence : with the meaning of each individual word given exactly The term "Mardi Gras" literally means "Fat Tuesday" in French.
d : in a completely accurate way a story that is basically true even if not literally true

I assume they’re being hyperbolic, but I don’t tend to think they are trying to convince others it’s the actual truth.
It does annoy me because it’s not used in the formal sense.

You aren't allowed to talk about KB on here no matter how poor of a mother she is. She has mental illness, and that is no laughing matter. Literally.

The improper use of "literally" is figuratively making my head explode.
Posted on 7/21/18 at 11:27 pm to OKellsBells
People that overuse "honestly", "in all honesty", "if I'm being perfectly honest" etc... are liars.
People who say "literally" all the time just aren't very smart.
