I have some family members from Costa Rica who visited Cuba a few years back. They said when you go to the store to buy something they didn't want money, they rather have a bar of soap, toilet paper, deodorant, salt, or toothpaste. They rather trade then have money because it wasnt worth anything and those items are hard to come by over there.
