And in Africa, sadly, if your mom is HIV positive, you're likely to be born HIV positive, too.
Because of our blood screening problems, I agree with you - generally - that in the U.S., gay men, IV drug users and sex workers are your 3 biggest risk categories (sex workers are also more likely to be IV drug users, so that's double whammy) - but right behind them are folks at the upper end of the promiscuous scale - simply because more encounters, more risky encounters and more partners increases risk in a cumulative (phrasing) way.

Wearing a condom reduces that miniscule chance by another 90ish % to around .004% if my memory serves me correctly.
It is almost impossible to contract HIV from a female while wearing a condom correctly.
When you take that number and compound it with the HIV rates in your area, you have to be the unluckiest sumbich in the history of humanity to:
A) take home some strange that has HIV in the first place
B) lose the 1 in 25,000 lottery and actually get HIV while using a condom
Wrap it up, don't take it in the pooper and don't do drugs kids, or you'll end up like Charlie Sheen

The kryptonite of this point is condoms. Use them properly and HIV shouldn't ever be a worry unless you take it in the arse or use needles for fun.

I don't think it's that high - if neither receive treatment AND the mother breastfeeds, overall chance is about 1 in 3.
With treatment (like in the developed world), I think it drops to like 2% - which is incredible when you consider that the disease was such a mystery 30 years ago - normally people were diagnosed, had symptoms within 1 to 3 years and were dead within 5 to 10 (at the longest).
Now - you have more and more Magic Johnson type stories (24 years since diagnosis) and fewer and fewer Freddie Mercury (a 5 year disease progression from diagnosis to death, which was relatively normal at the time).

And why is it that it is higher in gay males? Think about it for a second and think about the fact that men do sometimes perform that same act on women. It isn't that it is gay sex that is making it higher risk, but the actual act performed, which many men do to women, so your entire premise is just stupid.
He didn't have to do what some whore claims he did because she's trying to get paid.

No. My premise is that Charlie most likely either shared needles or took a load in the butt to get HIV, because the chances of a heterosexual vaginal encounter infecting the male is almost nil.
Fact: Gays and needle sharers get HIV at a much higher rate than hetero males who do not use drugs or dabble in receptive booty sex.
The numbers above were more of an indictment on the falsehoods people spread about HIV. The truth is, as long as you are male, wear a condom, don't take loads in the butt, and don't do drugs, HIV be on your radar as a threat.
