LinkedIn profiles: are they actually worth anything?

If you're actively looking for a job or want to change employers, I suppose I understand the potential value. But what about everything else?

Can a good profile directly lead to more income, or help improve your life?

Or is mostly BS?

I'm genuinely curious, but definitely skeptical.

I have over 500 connections on it. On your news feed, you see posts liked by every connection of yours.

Used to be good until attention deprived hoes and fat chicks took it over. If it isn’t about them, it’s people who don’t know what they have between their legs spewing more rainbow themes about their workplace.

Almost every post is about some fake stories that didn’t happen or why someone who is unemployed for 6 months is a good thing because “follow your dreams” etc B.S

Don’t waste your time.

It's like facebook for professionals, without your crackpot grandparents sharing political memes - although that has cropped up more lately.

Most useful if you're in sales or recruiting, or want to be recruited.

networking?

Yeah some people are turning it into FB, but it's still a great networking tool.
And it's also valuable to recruiters

I've had people contact me though it when they couldn't get an email or number elsewhere. I've done the same. I think it's mostly valuable as a job search site, though I've never used it for that purpose. I generally don't actively use it except to occasionally scout out competitors. It's free, just about every professional is on it.

It has a job board akin to Monster or Indeed and you have the ability to be contacted by recruiters or contact them yourself. It can definitely help with getting a job.

Most people I know just treat it as an extended, online version of their resume.

I’d say it’s still the best social media platform out there, even though lately it’s been invaded by libs and SJW type propaganda.

It helped me immensely during my job search a few months ago.

I get probably 50 requests or more about looking at job openings a year. I'm not that interested in leaving my current job, but I'll use those to leverage a raise or leave if I get a really good opportunity.

So, yes, it's very useful, but I'm not sure I've ever gone through my feed.

It’s mostly just a free data tool for companies tbh.

It’s a great tool if you’re interested in other opportunities.

Once you select the option that you’re open for opportunities, recruiters will reach out.

I’ve recently switched that option on, and I’ve been contacted by a number of potential employers. It’s good to see what’s out there, and you can interview for the sake of having some leverage for a raise with your current employer.

A lot of bigger employers now accept resumes via LinkedIn. Makes the application process a breeze.

It’s like most things in life- a lot of BS, but interspersed with some value.. as other have mentioned , a lot of recruiters do their, well, recruiting on LinkedIn.. and they do have a pretty good job search platform if you’re looking.. .. It’s always good to maintain a prescience there unless you’re 100% sure you’ll always have your current job til the day you retire.. and, let’s be honest, there aren’t a lot of people in that situation these days.

Looks like you’re in DFW? Hows the market there for sales, specifically Medical/Healthcare? I’ve been starting to think about moving on from my current position; i hear that Dallas is booming of course, but it seems like so many people are moving there, that there’d be a crapload of applicants for every job(?)

This, its also a great way for people like me document work events/presentations/big projects/conferences, etc., especially since I rarely update my resume or CV.

I know a couple of people that do it out here. They do well and I know one thing they all like is they don't have to travel outside of the metro plex because there's so many hospitals all within a hour. As to the actual market, don't really know.

There's so much stuff moving here they can't fill a lot of the jobs fast enough. We've been hiring for the last 2 years and can't really keep up because people have already accepted something else or have so many other options it's hard to get them here.

I wasn’t necessarily looking for a job, but I was contacted by a recruiter (on LinkedIn) about a job with a 15% raise, that was 100% remote. I now work at that job

I make >90% of my hires from LinkedIn alone. I've also gotten my last two jobs from LinkedIn messages. It works and is important.
