I don’t doubt life is good in WV. Such a beautiful state.
Gotta admit though, I went snow skiing about 25 years ago in WV. During the trip to the ski resort, through the mountains, I saw some extreme poverty. I didn’t realize anything like it existed in the US. It was a real eye opener. To this day I still remember this little girl we saw driving up the mountain. She had no shoes, barely any clothes and looked half starved, outside of what I’d describe as a lean to type of shack. I actually got choked up. I’ve lived a fairly good life. I’ve known poor people. But I wasn’t prepared for that.

Skylar needs to let me fill her in on something completely unrelated.

Odd place. Not quite southern. Not quite what I’d previously known as Appalachian (WNC and ETN). Not quite midwestern despite sharing a long border with Ohio. Certainly not mid-Atlantic despite same with Pennsylvania.
Yeah that's one of the weird things about the western panhandle. I can see Ohio through my front window, and I could (probably) see Pennsylvania if I stood on my roof, but there is a noticeable touch of Southern accent where I live. My guess is that it's one of the larger cities in the state and people flocked here from all over, but it's still bizarre

I think I would rather live in alabama than West Virginia tbh
I'm riding a fine line between breaking the stigma and keeping it silent before Californians find us, but here, I'm just trying to lessen the stigma.

WV is a poor state but it is also a beautiful state. Just gorgeous.

West Virginia is beautiful.
But the southern 1/3 of the state from the Kentucky/Virginia borders up to around Beckley is definitely southern in culture.
The northern portion from Fairmont to the Pennsylvania border is basically Pittsburgh South. This is where the Pittsburgh accent comes into vogue.I am including the western panhandle (Wheeling) in this also.

I enjoy West Virginia. Used to do a lot of work there. It's absolutely no different than Eastern KY. Beautiful area, just a lot of poverty in the hollers.

Very cool family that wouldn't harm a soul.

The entire country is economically depressed and heading towards third world status. Now let’s get back to our industry of quantitative easing and endless lending.

There now for work. At a great gym called Amped. Where can I find a college coed to bang? Asking for a coworker.

I was born in WV and raised across the river in Kentucky. Went up to Lincoln County to see the grandparents every week as a child and when I was home from college as I was a bit older.
I hated it. The drive on Route 10 between Huntington and Hamlin, and then on up to Griffithsville was miserable and depressing to me.
Mom passed away in August. I was fortunate enough to have been with her for the entirety of the previous week not knowing that there would only be a few more days to enjoy her presence. So now, a few decades after the family had moved south, we drove from my mother's home in Dothan, Alabama and up to the mountain top in Yawkey. WV where she was laid to rest by Dad and my two older siblings, I finally saw the state with new eyes. The rolling hills, low mountains, deep hollers off the beaten path and the friendliness of the people in southern West Virginia all took me back to a time that I thought didn't exist anymore.
To put it simply and succinctly, it was peaceful.
I don't know that I'd like to move back there since I'm not too fond of cold weather and wet winters, but a part of me that I had long neglected came to the surface on that trip to remind me that West Virginia is the place of my birth and will always be "home" for my soul.
