I used to own a share of a boat that we kept in Pamlico Sound so we had to go out through the Oregon Inlet. I am not kidding when I say there were nights when we were leaving out in the morning I had nightmares of going under the Bonner Bridge (replaced now) and running aground on sandbars that weren't there the day before and getting rolled by swells. After a couple of years, we moved it to Charleston, the drive down wasn't as long, but the fishing wasn't as good, but we also didn't feel like we were going to die getting to blue water.

This. If anyone wants an instructional video how to navigate the inlet with a small craft, WavyBoats posted an excellent video recently ("Blue Top Legend"). I think yesterday. I watch it for instructional purposes only, of course.

I use the 10th street ramp in Sarasota a few days a week. Is a big nice ramp and during the week, it is mostly guides and fishermen. Not bad. On the weekend however, it is a mess.


Freshwater is so much easier because there's typically two guys on a boat and both know how to work the boat or the vehicle. With the saltwater boat, you tend to have eight people on board and only one guy knows how to drive the boat, tied to the dock and back to trailer. So Boats get tied to the dock right in front of the ramp and that ramp now is unusable until this guy goes up gets his vehicle brings it down back it in and get a boat on the trailer and pulls into the parking lot. It's just a lot of wasted time at the ramp, but it is what it is.


I don't know how many days I have used the boat ramp in the past 45 years but I promise you it is a lot. My guess 7 to 10,000 days. I have seen some shite. Between the ramps down here and the ramps on Lake Lanier, I could write a book.

These videos pretty much let me know I probably shouldn’t own a boat.




Not that was the only factor, but it didn’t help.

I like the ones where they have people laying out on the bow.

In seas like that, a smaller boat is an advantage. Longer boats have the stern elevated on the previous wave which cantilevers the bow into a nose dive into the next wave. A smaller boat can ride each wave up and down gracefully.
