Let's Talk Child Support

I was speaking with a friend today that didn't want to go through a divorce with her husband because of the onerous burden child support would be on her husband. Husband is a good guy with a good job, but according to her, even if he lost his job, child support is calculated based on minimum wage at that point (this is Alabama). They opted to just stay separated at this point.
He would still owe $475 per child per month.
Ok, so let's work this out.
Alabama minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Before taxes that's $1,160 per month. So he's out $425 to start with. Then say $700 a month for a decent one-bedroom apartment (one he could conceivable bring his kids to). He's already flat broke before he buys food or pays his power bill. And if he doesn't or can't pay, DHR gets involved, he goes to jail.
This all serves to put men in an untenable and unsustainable position.
So, I guess, don't get married, don't havve kids, and if you do, work shite out.
It really is cheaper to keep 'er.

700 is high for a 1 bedroom apt. I can get a 2-3 bedroom 1-1/2 bath for 500 or less here.
He would likely get food stamps and such in that scenario

Couldn’t she agree to settle for a reasonable amount of child support?

That's not how child support is calculated.

Alabama requires you submit a child support schedule in all divorce proceedings. That's their minimum.
ETA: It's because they are representing the child. The adults have little say in the final decision of the court here.

I can't imagine many people that have kids are making minimum wage. At least not the type that actually pay child support.

I live in Birmingham suburbs and that's about the going rate. I've never paid less than $600.

Some things are worth the money, and even after paying child support based on the state's standard scale, and a multitude of other expenses I still had more available money after getting divorced because I was not having to fund all of the stupid things my ex-wife considered a necessity.

Couldn’t he get more custody? Why is he required to pay that much even if he’s making minimum wage?

I got extremely lucky and got 50/50, the house, no child support and no alimony.
But I know people that are paying ridiculous amounts (in the thousands) while the mother is getting supported by some other dude. Nothing like paying so some other guy can shtup your wife. And it seldom goes to the kids like it should.

I don't know. This was just a conversation I had today. In their filing, they didn't even mention child support because it's amicable and she trusted him to pay his fair share..
Their filing was rejected by the court.

Then they need to get a lawyer. There’s no way men are automatically required to pay that much regardless of income unless they’re only getting the kid every other weekend. If it’s 50/50, it’ll be way less.

Huh, always thought you were a guy. Good to know.

Child support should never be determined by the person that is paying income.
It should be based on half of the real cost to raise a child in the state the child lives.

A childhood friend of mine has a kid from an ex wife and another from a fling and he pays $1400, and he probably doesn't make more than 45-50k.
The ex wife lives in fricking Mallard Lakes too and still makes him pay it.
