I read threads like this and feel great.

Then I go on the money board and feel like a piece of shite.

Well this is almost dead-on accurate, but I'm 6-4. Actually lost 10 pounds and counting the last couple months. Quarantine put me over 200 for the first time in my life.

Not gonna compare notes on the financials, but will say my wife and I do better than average now but even when we were below average we saved like crazy to avoid life's numerous eventual pitfalls. I can't imagine 2 working parents making 60k and not knowing how to a pay a $500 bill.

We live in a dysfunctional society. We place profit as our priority, and youth culture is a new concept over the last hundred years. We separate children from parents, and children are forced to learn from other children, it’s even encouraged by us, the parents. we have them in school, sports teams, kids church, kids table, and now with gaming and social media. Children or not capable of providing the environment for one to reach maturation, this creates a dysfunctional adult, one with childlike tendencies. A child’s compass points to either parents or peers, and doing so opposes the opposite.

Coinciding is the ever increasing distractions of parents. These distractions are workaholism, entertainment i.e. TV social media, substance use.
We seek human connection, but replace them with these distractions. We do this because they are predictable and easy, and they almost work to fill the void, but never do, this is why these distractions always increase.

With today’s parental distractions, and our societies placement of children with children, it is almost impossible for a parent to keep that compass point on them, and to have the power to parent their child into their teens.

when parents are not close to their children it forces them to use punishment techniques that actually suppress their thoughts, ideas, emotions. It hinders individualism, and self-esteem. And ultimately pushes the child away to peers.

If any of this resonates, read hold onto your kids by Gordon Neufeld

I had 10K saved within a couple months of graduating college for an emergency fund. I just don’t get how that can be one’s first priority if they don’t already have it

I agree with everything in your post, except this part is a tad simplistic. Sounds like some Gabor Mate Marxist stuff. (And I agree with a lot of his addiction/trauma/child rearing analysis.)

The good news for you is that two of those problems only require one solution... Stop stuffing your fat face.

Honestly thought it would be higher. All I see at the beach these days are fat little kids waddling around everywhere. Sorry arse parents never gave them a chance.
