Let’s play Olympic math. It’s a fun game because it always ends in explosions of incredulous laughter. Why does the USOC have 500-odd employees when we send just 554 athletes to the Summer Games? How come a supposed “nonprofit” with revenues of $336 million gives just $28 million to athletes in direct cash and assistance, and where does the rest of it go?

Sally Jenkins column in the Washington Post was picked up by the Chicago Tribune

I'd need to see her sources on some of these claims before I have an opinion.

Because some 10,000+ try and qualify?

The events don't run themselves. And if Sally wasn't lazy she could just look up their Form 990 and find out.

Is a hack. It's no secret the IOC is dirty, but it's not going to show up in their organization. It's all the leaders taking bribes.

Does the USOC pay for the athletes' training?

The training facilities and coaches (if they pay for them) are probably not cheap!

I don't care as long as I can watch my Olympics. Also, I want baseball and golf to return, stat.

Probably pretty expensive to put on all the qualifying and Olympic trial events in so many different sports. Plus operate and maintain the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado.

Sally Jenkins clearly doesn't know accounting. It's perfectly legal for nonprofits to make a profit, they just can't have stockholders to share profit with.
