I’m glad we dropped the bombs. Likely saved my grandfathers life. Sucks for them, but their govt picked a fight that it lost.

It's very easy to make hindsight judgments some 75 years after the fact. Please remember that the world had been at war since 1939 (though many historians view the Japanese invasion of China in 1937 as the start of WWII) and roughly 85 million people had been killed. The United States had lost over 400,000 servicemen in the fighting, with roughly 30,000 of those fatalities coming in the last two battles of the Pacific War (Iwo Jima and Okinawa). It is very likely that an invasion of mainland Japan would have cost us an additional 100,000 American lives before it was all said and done.
In a war that had killed so many in so little time, what was 80,000 civilian deaths compared to the possible alternative of an entire nation being wiped off the map in a ground invasion?

Because he is ignorant of history and has demonstrated that in this thread. The Japanese fought to the last man to protect rocks in the middle of the Pacific. Millions would have died in an invasion of the homeland. We picked strategic industrial hubs in Japan to lessen civilian loss. We could have been ruthless and nuked Tokyo. It was brutal but necessary to end WWII.

You know absolutely nothing about WW2 era Japan. They were going to defend that island to the last person. Casualty estimates for Operation Downfall were conservatively estimated to be around 5 million. The fact that Japan didn't quit after the first bomb was dropped shows that it was the right decision. That was the most evil, barbaric society of the last 1000 years. They made ISIS look like choirboys.

I am amazed at the lack of knowledge of basic history. First of all, it was a fricking war and lots of innocent people die in wars. The Japanese at the time were one of the most evil civilizations in the history of the world. They were trained to fight to the death without ever surrendering and mothers volunteered their own sons to act as kamikaze pilots to die for their country. They committed genocide against the people of every pacific island they invaded, and all the reasons I just listed aren’t even half of the reasons why the bombs needed to be dropped. Was it a terrible thing? Yes, but in that situation it was absolutely necessary to ensure stability in the world for the future.

Considering their body count, their atrocities against civilians, and some of the horrific shite they did to POWs, they absolutely were one of the most barbaric civilizations in history. The Nazis don't hold a candle to the WW2 era Japs. We just don't get taught about their atrocities in school nearly as much as we should.
I just did this a week ago, but some examples:
Cutting flesh from live POWs, cooking it and eating it, and then leaving said POWs to die in ditches.
Herding US POWs into air raid shelters, blocking the entrances, and setting the shelters on fire.
Tying Indian POWs to the surface of submarines and then diving the submarines with the POWs on the surface.
Tying POWs together in groups of 20, lining them up on the edge of a ship, and shooting one, causing the rest of them to fall overboard and drown.
Transporting POWs in overcrowded cargo holds while not marking the ships as carrying POWs. This led to numerous ships being torpedoed by American submarines who were unaware that Allied POWs were trapped in the holds while the ships sank. Google "hell ships".
Torpedoing hospital ships.
Rounding up nurses, raping and then executing them.
Human experiments (Unit 731).
The rape of Nanking.
The construction of the Burma Railway.
I could go on and on but I don't feel like it right now.

VJ Day is still considered a holiday in Rhode Island. Fun fact.

It really is odd when these discussions come up every August.
The Allied bombing campaigns in Europe killed civilians as well. But that seems to be justified in most people’s minds due to the well documented atrocities of the Nazi regime.
