Congrats on the literacy.
Any details on his actions that have you so upset? I know he advised people to avoid the freedmen (but him being a white supremacist doesn't make different from about 99.99% of the white population at the time and on whole, at least from the evidence I've seen, he was well within the moderate camp on that one). He was pretty pissed about soldiers stealing his wife's personal effects from Arlington House and wrote some angry letters about it. Though I believe that when mess with the bull you get the horns, I can still understand him being upset.
There are rumors that he cheated on his wife before the war, but nothing substantiated (though some surmise that it's why the family won't release his papers). His daughters tickling his feet was weird.
On the whole, though, he was a powerful voice for peaceful reconciliation.

Lots of people are under the impression that slavery in the south ended in 1865. Never mind the black codes (later Jim Crow), the forced sharecropping, the denial of voting rights, and the continued state-sanctioned suppression of blacks more than a century after the war ended.
And to think some think blacks should "get over it."

Should I give up my property and rights as a United States citizen because of something my great, great, great, great, grandfather may have taken part in? Or should I pay a tax to the this generations AA's who's great great great great great grandfathers had these injustices forced upon them?
none of these are happening, so yeah....get over it.

Have you read David Blight's Race and Reunion?
The old saying goes that the North and South buried the hatchet in the black man's back, which is true.
Check out Robert Penn Warren's (LSU man, btw) Legacy of the Civil War.
Warren does a great job of assaying the legacy of the war and the gnashing, shirt ripping on both sides. The knee-jerk reaction that the white South was completely evil and treasonous and that the white North was morally righteous fits into ideologically simplistic narratives that were generated as a result of the war and used conveniently afterward to justify near about whatever they liked (and which do little to fully understand the conflict or its aftermath). Neither was accurate, however. Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and many other "great emancipators" turned to slaughtering Indians after the war, which seems about on par with whatever the South did.
Lee's comments about African Americans are repugnant by today's standards, but, again, they were far from extreme during the period. Lincoln himself made very similar comments during his debates with Douglas.
None of which is offered as an excuse or justification for the white South, but to say that anyone trumpeting the North's leaders, or claiming what white southern attitudes about racial superiority were an anathema to the national mindset, during the period can crawl on down off their self-righteous horse.
