There is a guy I know, fairly well off, who has about 8 dogs.. mostly hunting type dogs... labs, and I think he has a GSP or two. I drive by his house daily (it's on the route out of my neighborhood).... weekdays, weekends, various times of the day. It's a nice set up, built off the ground, and it's covered. Best I can tell, he literally leaves the dogs in there 24/7. They are never let out to run or play, and I don't think he takes them hunting. He seems to collect animals. He has rabbits, chickens, guenea pigs, etc...

I'm "aquatinted" with the guy. Our kids are in the same class and do activities together. But not close enough to where I would feel comfortable discussing it with him. It's probably not my business, but it just seems really shitty to me to treat dogs like that. He has a large fenced in yard that he could easily let them run around in it. Seems like they'd get really frustrated, not to mentioned being exposed to the summer heat and winter cold, rain, wind, etc...

I have an English Pointer and a lap dog, and I just couldn't imagine treating them like that.

this is true. and it would be a waste of your time. hes not going to have a light bulb go out and change his ways.

I grew up in a dog hunting club in SW MS. During the season (november-end of january) we had no less that 50 beagles in a large pen. they were in the same containment during the summer elsewhere with their owners. its fricked up, but they could live worse lives. i wouldnt support it, but these situations are a dime a dozen, looks at peoples yards with dogs on chains. none of these people should own animals.

Sounds like he has workingm/hunting dogs. If so, you don’t know what the frick you’re talking about. Those dogs are trained to only desire one thing, and that’s to work/hunt. They don’t want to “run around” and “play”

Yeah, that's what every animal longs for, to be locked in a small cage 24-7.

If he does not hunt with them, or train them then he should be whipped.

However, if you have ever paid to have a dog trained, you would realize that dogs remain in the kennel until it is time to train. 2-3 times per day.

Don’t jump to conclusions people

I doubt the guy spent all that money on the setup you described just to be an arse to the dogs.

I bets those pups eat better than you.

I don't care about him taking them inside. Nothing wrong with outside dogs. But to live 365 days/yr in a 4X6 cage over your own piss and feces? Come on. That's bullshite. No dog "desires" to live like that. My Pointer is a hunting dog. If he doesn't get regular exercise, he gets frustrated and starts acting out. Good Hunting dogs are worked and trained during the off season.

Show me an article written by an expert that says to leave your dogs in a cage 24/7 is the best way to train them.

So what say you if these "working/hunting dogs" never/rarely get worked?

While I tend to disagree and believe all except livestock guard dogs ahould also be house dogs, kenneled working dogs need daily work.

I have never once seen him working the dogs and I know who he duck hunts with... he doesn't bring his dogs when he duck hunts, which is rare anyway.

This.

This is my brother in law. Duck hunting is the mans life hobby. And he makes sure duck hunting are his labs life. He always has one to two. If they are out of the kennel it is to hunt or to work. Period.

Playing with them “makes them idiots”. His words. Lol

Look it up yourself. Multiple posters have responded quickly with similar advice. Burden of proof is on you Ethel.
