What's going on in China with the Uyghers has nothing to do with 9/11 or Islamic terrorism in the West

I have no love at all for Islam and if I could cast a magic spell that made it no longer exist I would do it in a heartbeat. But I also have no love for anyone who is totally OK with violence against someone they have no fricking clue about.

China has a clear record of disgusting abuses against all of its neighbors, nothing to do with putting down Islam. China is the enemy of the U.S. and we could be using this as leverage to weaken them on the international stage but nah, go ahead and rah-rah-rah our enemy's abuses over the innocent.

The Soviets tried to do this in Central Asia during the 50's, in an effort to stamp out religion, and Islam in particular. They weren't successful, and the result of losing out on traditional knowledge of the variety of Islam practiced in Central Asia meant that the region became ripe for terrorist recruitment. Which it has. The same thing is going to happen to China. China is currently buying off Muslim countries so those countries ignore what the Chinese are doing, but if that source of money runs dry, what do you expect will happen?

Around 5,000 Uyghurs of the Turkistan Islamic Party have been fighting in Syria for the last five years. The same pattern that started in the 80's will reemerge, as this will set the basis for a prolonged insurgency, as it did in Chechnya and Dagestan, and as it has in the West. If you give a group of people with disparate ideologies a reason to organize around a common belief, don't be surprised when they do.

Chinese repression isn't just limited to Uyghur Muslims. It is also extended to Hui Chinese, a name given to Han Chinese who converted to Islam, a conversion process that began in the 7th century, which is when the first mosque was built in the region. It is also extended to Christianity, which is strictly controlled. It also represses Buddhists and the Falun Gong.

Maybe the Chinese want an armed response so that can justify a more overt campaign against the Uyghur population in general, but Chinese Central Asian interests revolve exclusively around Muslim countries, and thus a more pragmatic approach would be required. But the blowback is going to be another decades long affair, if history is anything to go by.
