You must not be very familiar with Buddhism. The monks at the local temple take a vow of poverty. It’s severe. No contributions to the temple are required to attend and all contributions are public. No gifts to monks or nuns are allowed without permission and they must be modest and necessary. They share a car. They get one week of vacation per year. They eat one meal per day ( lunch ) and are strictly vegetarian. Just sayin ‘.

Besides training the occaisional martial arts warrior in movies, what impact do they have on the world around them?
What's even in it for them?

Not necessarily true. Maybe they, too, hope for meaning, but also decry those who have a long track record of profiting from the fact that all humans are insecure about death and the fact that there is no way to know what happens when we meet our end.
I take your point that not everyone who rejects religion have no hope beyond death...even though if you believe there is anything beyond annihilation then it is a form of religion.. but sure, I will concede to your point on that but by the same token, the allegations you further lay out that religion is basically comprised of leaders who are hucksters trying to take advantage of adherents...that's a bit broad and over-reaching too no???

There is a huge difference in spirituality and organized religion. The latter tells you what you have to believe in order to achieve the goal. The other allows you freedom to choose what you want to believe and doesn't force things down your throat.
The choice is simple for me.

I watched selfishly because I am in complete love with Leah Remini, but on a serious note the stories are so compelling and I am blown away at how that cult gets away clean on virtually everything they do to kids and people in general.

Dumb statement is retarded.
You may as well say that because I gave money to Wendy's for a burger that Wendy's has control of me.

If you want to lump a very general hope that there's light at the end of tunnel into the "religion" bucket, that's fine. I don't know that I'd call it that, but it doesn't matter.
I made a vague statement because I don't personally enjoy pissing in other people's Cheerios. I also don't pretend to know more than anyone else. I just find all of the finger waving and name calling counterproductive.
All I am saying is that people who have blind faith (in anything) make perfect marks for con men or hucksters, to take your words.
I'm not saying your religion or anyone else's is wrong. I'm saying that one man's cult is another man's religion, and that there are terrific examples of religious leaders preying (pun intended) on the insecurities of man, in particular the poor for whom life is the hardest and whose thirst for meaning is the greatest.
Just as I disagree with people who like to lump all religious people together, I disagree with devout people who do the same to those who simply give valid criticism. Attacking people is a lot easier than attacking ideas.

Helping the human beings in their orbit, spreading compassion and love, extending kindness and spiritual guidance to those who are struggling, teaching meditation , wisdom, human nature and quiet reflection, presiding over religious practice and funerals, helping the grieving, teaching the principles of ethical living, etc etc.
You shouldn’t be so angry about things you don’t understand. Anger at things you don’t understand is usually just attachment to your ego. Ignorance is suffering. Don’t be the cause of your own suffering.

I try to understand things I don't understand. Buddhism and Scientology are things I don't understand. Mainly because they don't make sense. But, to be fair, a lot of people say my faith doesn't make sense either. Those people don't seek to understand, so is their ignorance suffering too?
