100% this. I won't stand my ground. If I can get out of a situation safely without using force I will, even if using it is justifiable.

my dog was going crazy at my side carport door one time and i stepped out thinking it was an animal
i stood there looking and suddenly noticed a young man with hoody sneaking away from my car
i started yelling told my dog to get him and they both took off down the street
he jumped into a car
when cops came to dust the window he was prying at i asked the cop that exact question
his words were "this is texas sir no one is going to question you actions to protect yourself and property"
i suspect louisiana is the same

the real question is do you really want to shoot someone
unless life in danger idk
your private decision

Whether you see it as justifiable or not, you really don't want to deal with the emotional toll of killing another human being, particularly over a gas can.

Unless you are a sociopath, this act would haunt you for a very long time.

You better drag him into your home after shooting him.

referencing the qualifications for being a cop thread, most cops think they "practice law," and all of them are shoot first, ask questions later when it comes to stand your ground advice

Get a dog. Thieves look for an easy target and don't like the noise and threat of bodily harm from a dog.

If you shoot someone you better be legitimately fearing for your life.

Question is, what is the state law in regards to shooting someone stealing your property? This is of course assuming I catch the person in the act on my property... I live in Louisiana

Angola. Dixon Correctional or Elayn Hunt if you'r lucky.

Also a bright idea: talking about this premeditated action on a public forum.

Best thing I hear in my Concealed Carry class was, regardless of whether you are in the right or not, your life is going to change for the worst going forward.

people seem to just ignore this sometimes. Obviously if your home is broken into and your life or family is in danger, you have to do what you have to do.
But in the case of the OP, yeah the world won't miss the POS but if you are a normal person you'll be affected moving forward. At least in the first scenario you can rationalize that easily internally because your family was in danger.

If you shoot him, make sure you drag him through a window or door. And for god sakes make sure he’s dead

You damn right I do. I don't want people stealing ANY of my stuff.

If a few more thieves got shot, there'd be a lot less thieving.

Justification for the use of lethal force in Louisiana is for the protection of life only, not property.

you cant shoot anyone no matter the circumstances unless in the case of imminent threat to your life or your family lives.

even shooting in the leg to keep them from escaping will be called attempted murder if they are unarmed.

if you plan to shoot someone then you better have an untraceable gun to plant on them or you going to jail. it doesnt sound fair but criminals have more rights then you do
