A reference point for those in SELA is Gustav. Gustav was a borderline 2/3 at landfall. Laura, per the GFS, would be ever so slightly stronger but a little further west of where Gustav came ashore at. If Laura does what the GFS shows, BR would have a few hours of sustained winds 40-50 mph with gusts to hurricane force.

There’s a big difference in a strengthening storm and a weakening storm at landfall. Gustav was a deteriorating Cat 2. If this one comes on shore while it’s strengthening it’s a whole different ballgame.

Rapidly expanding CDO coming from a group of hot towers lit full of lightning near the new center, the new center isn't only becoming dominant but also seems to be RI-ing. (Laura)

The wind even sounds different when a storm makes landfall while strengthening compared to a weakening storm. The intensity and ferocity is different.
