Duke, I knew you could explain it better than all the details in that Wiki article I posted at about the same time.
I'm not sure "they're like tornados but technically aren't" was all that much better.

There are many variables that determine the amount of damage a particular structure will receive. Mesovortices, exposure to unblocked wind, quality of construction and materials are just some. Regardless, anything that got hit with the 130+ mph gusts was going to sustain some significant damage.
For sure, it's more complicated than just getting a meso but they're small enough in scale that you'll see them cut through areas of similar construction and wind protection.
They're an interesting subsubject of the eyewall, even if the theory behind them is still a little over my head.

quote:Went up to Pineville today to buy a camper. Almost every house “in a field” was damaged along 171.
. A house by itself on a large lot or piece of property without large trees or other houses to block the wind can be more damaged than another house that is 'blocked' by trees and other houses.
Finally got to see the mangled transmission towers north of Moss Bluff too. Jesus, the wind speed to just twist those structures is mind boggling.
There’s also a sign down in north Lake Charles on 171 that’s down. That motherfricker is built with twin 24” I-beams. They’re just twisted and bent over to the ground.
ETA: random thought today as we were driving: WTF are Tesla owners doing right now? Are they just stuck or are they buying gasoline for the generator to charge the car?

Well it's WAY over my head

Stay safe and hydrated y'all ... Memorial ER is open and being managed by the military per my brother who works at Memorial. Don't know that they're equipped for major trauma -- PLEASE be careful.

Mesovorticies. They aren't really tornados but the effect is generally the same.
Expected with such a strong storm and one at least holding steady in strength at landfall. I figure you're seeing patterns like this all over the LC area. Some smaller areas with substantial damage and just moderate damage around it.
The shape and movement of Laura's eye pre-landfall sure looked like it had a few. I've been on the lookout for more discussion on it. Haven't seen alot yet.

Can anyone suggest a store in decent proximity to LC that is open where my son can buy some moisture wicking socks and underwear? They are supposed to be getting the ability to wash soon but he is running through 2-3 pair of socks a day. Any outdoors place should work.

Thank you so much, I will pass that on.

The amount of force exerted by a 150 mph wind is something that is difficult to comprehend until you see things like that.
One way to look at it is that a 74 mph wind is 4 times 'stronger' than a 37 mph wind. And a 148 mph wind is 4 times 'stronger' than a 74 mph wind.
This means that a 148 mph wind is 16 times 'stronger' than a 37 mph wind.

Yep here in Welsh you see a lot of that some houses torn to pieces the house next door no damage it’s so fascinating and frustrating at the same time. My house must of been hit with one of those because it tore a hole in my roof and my next door neighbor had no damage to his house.

Still at the "oh shite it's bad everywhere" phase. One of the LIX mets has family over there and is helping clean up and I've seen him talk about seeing some evidence of them.
There's no doubt with that eye structure they were swirling about.
ETA: I've seen some data too that suggests a "dirty eye" that wasn't completely calm. For a major hurricane with such a well developed eye, would almost have to be a or two meso rolling across the eye or just into it.
Hope this aside is interesting to our SWLA posters because I'd hate to take away from the help side of this thread and bore you at the same time.

Not boring at all and coming to read this post everyday gives me something to do in the evenings. Keep it up.

Good. See anything interesting, ask about it. Might not know the answer but I promise to baselessly speculate in that case.
You and yours holding up well? It's miserable hot I know and the work has only just begun.

Wife and kids are at my oldest daughter and husband’s house in Mont Belvieu. They take turn bringing in supplies as needed. Truthfully, we’re not that bad off right now and other than the steady growl of the generator, it’s actually been kind of therapeutic.
My claims have been made and I’ve been contacted by adjusters. Also found out that the business policy I purchased carries a “loss of business” clause. We may be being paid our lost earnings based off of last years tax return (last year was actually a very good year for us). They also cover any purchases made that prevent “further loss of business”. I want to find our policy and read it myself but we may be renting two 25kw generators and a diesel skid very soon. I felt like that was some pretty good news.
A friend of mine is renting a 100kw for his business @ $4200/wk. He came and got my gooseneck trailer today to go purchase some 200gal fuel tanks. The generator burns 40gal/day.

No it is not and I bet my source knows since they're the outage superintendent. They are saying 8 weeks to be fully operational. Some units might come up before others but they wont spin them all the way up at first. They never do after an outage. They bring them up slowly.
I think Entergy Calcasieu Plant in Sulphur was going online today.

I count myself very lucky. I have a ton of cleanup going on south of town but I'm staying with good friends out in Westlake who had minimal damage. Hot showers, AC and even DTV to recharge at night.

Anyone hear how that ole baw down in Grand Lake fared with the hay bail barrier around his place? I might take a ride down there tomorrow and check him out.
