I’ve been seeing and hearing this one was a lot worse
It is. I was one of the lucky ones with moderate damage. But it’s terrible. Downtown Lake Charles looks like planes came in and dropped bombs. I’ve seen the pictures in the inside of it and today was the first day I saw it person from the outside. And all i can say is “oh. my. god.” The middle half of the Civic Center collapses in on itself. It’s awful. And I know you’ve seen the C1 tower. Both, all my life, have been the “skyline” of LC. They’ll replace the windows in the C1 building but I’m not sure they just won’t bulldoze the civic center. It’s that terrible.

The company I work for actually put me and my family up in a Hyatt hotel in Houston for the time being. Being a proud father and husband I don’t like handouts but I was moved to tears. I will have to commute 2+ hours for the time being but they are going to be flexible!
Good for you. Mine sent a notice out that any time off because of disaster recovery will require PTO. Also, it has to be approved by your manager.
It’s laughable

Spent today in LC cutting wet carpet and securing family homes. This is one of worst looking post storms I’ve seen because of the snapped trees and roof damage.
I was in Iowa at a couple houses and then Lake Charles right off of Ryan St, a few blocks from Mcneese.
The wind damage was unbelievable. It was as bad if not worse than Panama City.
I’ve never seen solid steel high power lines snapped in half like toothpicks.
NOLA Katrina and the Mississippi Coast doesn’t compare because that was mostly storm surge damage.
Panama City and Lake Charles/Iowa was wind damage that ive never seen before.

Water was working in south Lake Charles.
Most places had water but very little pressure and you had to boil it, it wasn’t the kind of water you wanted to drink or brush your teeth with.

Is hwy171 passable all the way into Moss Bluff from I-10? Thanks!

Yes. It’s passable. Did it 3 times today.

A friend of mine asked if this was worse than Rita.
I told him absolutely. With Rita, some people flooded, some people had wind damage, and some people had both.
With Laura, everyone has wind damage. And that wind damage affects everything, not just houses and businesses. A friend of mine got into town the day of the storm and had a major gas leak and told the fire dept about it. We are pretty sure they couldn’t find the house and gave up looking because 2 days later we try to clear their driveway of trees and find it still leaking. Our friend just turned it off himself.
It’ll be a long road to recovery but we will get there.
I’m pretty worried about the kids though. This will be a damn long time without school. They were supposed to go back last Monday.

There’s no doubt about it. Much worse than Rita.

It's bad, man. This is definitely going to be a marathon and not a sprint. The only reason more are not there helping now is there is nowhere for them to stay. They are popping up camps with trailers and tents, slamming 12 to a trailer on bunks now as it is.

Not to be mr. Negative; but word coming out of Nelson Entergy plant is that they are at best 8 weeks down
That’s very inaccurate

Same. I’m worried about that just as much as my house.

I was hoping it would be. I’ll delete that comment so I’m not spreading misinformation.

Update from Entergy for those of you impacted...
quote:
Progress continues to be made in Louisiana restoration efforts following Hurricane Laura, where crews have restored power to more than 100,000 customers.
With damage assessments nearly complete, estimated restoration timeframes are now available for a majority of the state. Crews are focusing on restoring emergency services first and then will prioritize work to restore the greatest number of customers. Current assessment of distribution system damage in Louisiana includes 6,200 poles, 2,513 transformers and 11,769 spans of wire.
The remaining assessments will be more difficult due to extensive damage, especially in hard-hit Lake Charles, Cameron and Calcasieu parishes. As progress is made throughout the state, crews will relocate to boost the number of restoration workers in Lake Charles.
At the height of the storm, approximately 270,000 Louisiana customers were without power. As of 7 p.m. Sunday, approximately 164,773 customers remain without power.
We use peak outages to measure our restoration progress. In severe weather like Hurricane Laura, power can be restored multiple times as the rolling effects of the storm move across the state. This is especially true for Entergy Louisiana’s Laura restoration, where 301,813 individual outages had been restored as of 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30.

CALCASIEU PARISH, La. (KLFY) The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating the double murder of an elderly couple.
According to officials, two bodies were found inside a home on Thompson Avenue in Iowa just after 7 a.m. Sunday.
A family member discovered the bodies of 73-year-old Joan O’Brien and 81-year-old Zoren O’Brien, sheriff officials said.
An investigation has revealed that the incident is not believed to be a random act and detectives have a person of interest who they have identified as 36-year-old Scot Martin Kidd of Kinder, the sheriff’s office said.
Kidd has a connection to the victims, the sheriff’s office said.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office at 318-491-3605.

Comprehending these numbers is impossible. 6200 poles!

Fun fact.
When entergy removes poles from your yard, they cut near the bottom of the pole, then jam the remaining pole into the ground with a cool pole jammer.
You can keep the cut down pole if you want (for docks/whatevs).
