Just get back to stick building rafters and joists instead of using trusses. Truss plates are a joke and studies show time and time again they are the main point of failure during fires, storms, etc vs stick built with a ton of nails in it. Get back to using 1x6 tongue and groove instead of OSB decking, get back to using better lumber because what they sell now is trash, etc. Homes in the Garden District have survived a ton of storms for 100+ years and survived this one too yet newer subdivisions with all of the latest and greatest engineering behind them and the newest codes look like they were in the middle of a war zone. Why?
My cousihs own an antebellum house near Opelousas. It has a one piece iron bar running the length of the attic and anchored to the brick wall at either end.

Brick in older homes was more than just a veneer, unlike today.

Podnahs even had some boudin today. Felt good taking a break from cleaning up all this mess to eat some feel good food. We all need it

Crazy how badly this storm escalated. Deridders entire power grid is decimated. Hopefully the gas shipments can meet generator demands

The Entergy outage map is showing most LC in “green.” Is that true?

I got my hopes up because after the storm had passed my subdivision showed green but I don’t have power.

Well, if you are in NOLA I would stay away from the InterContinental and The Whitney hotel around St Charles and Poydras for a while. FEMA and Red Cross just bused in some of the finest North Lake Charles/Gosport has to offer and gave them free hotel vouchers.
How do you get those? Must meet certain demographic requirements

They colored it green because of all the cash they’re going to have to dump to get it back on.

Do you have more info on Deridders power situation? Have family there I'm having difficulty getting in touch with.

Seems like 2 weeks minimum. Most of the poles are snapped in half. The entire grid is down

Found on Facebook in the Hurricane Laura Group

We just got word that Lake Charles HAS officially been declared a disaster area and FEMA is taking claims 8-5 starting tomorrow.
*Give the website some time to update*
Even if you have insurance, you can still apply and see what you qualify for. Reimbursement for evacuating is one of them. FEMA also gives hotel vouchers for those still needing hotels.
FEMA INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE
Use this link to start filling out for Individual Assistance (IA): LINK
Designated Parishes which qualify:
Allen
Beauregard
Calcasieu
Cameron
Jefferson Davis
You will need all SSNs for each resident in the residence including declared pre-tax income as would have been on your recent taxes.
This can help with lodging, fuel, medication, repairs not covered by insurance (up to $35,000), etc.
Once the process starts, you may be asked to either present your rental agreement or title/deed to your residence as verification that you indeed rent or own, respectively.
UPDATE- Reports that the website IS updated!
SAVE the FEMA ID they give you, when you get it. Essential!
After your application is processed you will be contacted by a FEMA inspector to check your home/business for damages. There are too many homes and not enough inspectors, usually.
Take pictures of EVERYTHING in case the inspector misses the damage and you are denied. You can appeal any denial, and your photos can get you through! Shingles, waterlines, everything.
Be your best advocate! This is the biggest disaster on the radar rn.

I was afraid things like this would happen — ER has limited services. Manned by the military and a few Memorial employees.
Glad it worked out for that guy.

Laura TWISTED trees that survived Rita
i drove in on 90 yesterday and this was amazing to see
huge oak trees that survived Rita, Audrey, etc. were twisted around before they were snapped. it's incredible
if it was safe to watch this shite in real time it would have been amazing to see the sheer power of this storm. i can't imagine watching a huge arse oak tree be ripped apart horizontally and then spun around 90 degrees

if you want to see this in real time, look at the PDO office in LC. the new brick exterior is on the ground. i had no idea it was built over another brick structure, which held firm
