It definitely would contaminate the surface water that drains into the Dnieper river which is the source of Crimea's water.

Some of those weapons are about 2% the size of the Hiroshima bomb. Enough to destroy a few city blocks and very little fallout. I imagine they would be pretty effective at blowing a gap through which mobile forces could pour. Russia could convince themselves we wouldn't retaliate over something no worse than a heavy artillery barrage. Who knows, they could be right.

Kinda just begs the question of why even do it though? If it’s just a heavy artillery barrage…why not just do a heavy artillery barrage?

The attacks were like 2AM Hawaiian time, we were doing pre-deployment workup stuff and most of us were in the rack. This was 10 years past the fall of the Soviet Union so everything was really relaxed and peaceful and everyone was just worried about being woken up for drills the next day.
I remember talking with the radioman who was on watch and he was shocked at first and didn’t know what to do when he got a legit bell ringer (ULF communication). Like it was some dusty box in the corner of the radio room and the people who trained him were like “eh, that thing never goes off, don’t worry about it”. Obviously though after a little bit of scrambling protocols were followed and all appropriate messages received.,

I kid, I spent my time on a fast attack keeping the hot rock hot and distributing power throughout the sub. I was out of Pearl as well although I didn’t get to the 766 until 2005.

Didn’t they already accidentally catch their own soldiers in attack due to wind direction near Mariupol?
Also, long term thought. Say Russia gets this territory. Who is going to be willing to live there as it will be completely devastated for more than a couple years? They will need to completely rebuild infrastructure.

His characterization of a tac nuke blast is low, depending on how you interpret a few. If you figure the blast radius is about 4km and "destruction" is about 2km and figure the average city block is about 100m square this is 31.4 city blocks.
That being said it really doesn't make a lot of sense to use a tac nuke for lane clearing in most circumstances. They would mainly be used to kill and destroy. Of course, we have no examples of them being used to determine what works and doesn't you would just have to compare them to huge volumes of concentrated conventional bombardment/shelling.
