If you’re in for longer reads, this article (from today) sheds light on life in the Ukrainian front lines in Donbas.
The marines have a low opinion of their adversaries. Oleksiy tells me how a single sniper managed to force a column of nine Russian armored vehicles to retreat. It sounds apocryphal. But one of the snipers nods and says, “Yeah, that was me. They’re terrified of Ukrainians.”

Groomer is a valid term in the US culture war, basically referring to activist teachers and their supporters introducing gender ideology at shockingly young ages.

It is early, and I was speaking of the past 70 years. Hopefully we will not get suckered in. Lots of greedy people will do their best to get us further involved. I am 58 years old and pretty damned tired of the violence we always seemed to be involved in.

First, I don’t want to derail the thread. Second, “grooming” has a specific definition related to gaining a child’s trust to lower their inhibitions to facilitate sex abuse.
(Edit: Think Sandusky doing “cool” things for kids like giving them gifts and giving them tours of athletic facilities.)
Whatever you may say about “gender ideology indoctrination,” it’s not exactly a ploy to bed children. Maybe inappropriate, maybe divisive, maybe a lot of things, but it doesn’t match the definition of “grooming” that was the definition until recently.

The lesson for the 20th century IMO is you can’t assume that if you leave an authoritarian in place, that the global situation going to get any better organically.
It’s like building a new bridge over the MS river in Baton Rouge: it’s too expensive to do now, everyone agrees it’s necessary in the long run, but it isn’t going to get any cheaper, so no matter when you ask the best time to fix it was 20 years ago.
North Korea is a prime example of this, the Kim family has been in place for 70 years and now no one wants to take on that project (modern view in South Korea is that they are now culturally distinct from the North and don’t want to pay for the rebuild). So, the globe is destined to deal with the Kim family and their nuclear testing shenanigans for the foreseeable future, with the 90’s (fall of USSR and weak China) being about the optimal time to have taken care of that situation.
