Russia’s spy hunters are increasingly worried about China’s espionage, even as the two countries grow closer.

Europe and the West had no interest in invading Russia... it was happy to pay it for its gas and oil, fertilizer, and whatever else. The former Soviet states want to be part of a NATO containment of Russia because they'll never trust it not to invade them again, but that's defense, not offense.
China, on the other hand, wants Siberia... for its resources, especially fresh water that Northern China desperately needs. It doesn't want to pay for them, it just wants them. Japan would also be happy to pry back the chain of Islands Russia took from it after WWII.
