Guardian: Romania election: EU breathes sigh of relief after Dan defeats far-right rival
Yes, the Romanian people need to be recognized for winning a long and dirty fight over control of their government. Putin did everything he could to disrupt the democratic process in Romania and place a puppet in power in Bucharest. It's a great illustration of how the GRU-Kremlin works to disrupt the democratic process and how they were defeated in Romania. This will be the blueprint for denying Putin in the future.
The Romanian people didn't want another Orban, Fico or Lukashenko imbedded in their government so they did what it took to maintain their democratic rights to free and fair elections. The authorities went through the courts to enforce election-interferance laws and then made more arrests when large caches of weapons and foreign currency were discovered in residences and offices of persons closely associated with Putin stooge Calin Georgescu.
The Russian propagandists have howled bloody murder over the arrests of their candidate and members of their network, ironically on the basis of it being unconstitutional. But the laws on election interference are clear and long-established, and thankfully in this case were enforced.
Again, this will be the blueprint for defeating Putin in the future - the Rule of Law and its fearless application.
Russian development of the Tik-Tok influencer support.
Arrests and weapons, cash seizures.
American values shamed when Trump and JD Vance criticize the court action.
Deep dive into the warlords behind Putin's efforts.
European-wide arrests on weapons-related warrants from Romania. Rolling up the entire GRU network, stem and root..

Key Takeaways:
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call on May 19 to discuss ceasefire and peace negotiations regarding Russia's war in Ukraine.
Russia must explicitly acknowledge the legitimacy of the Ukrainian president, government, and constitution and Ukraine's sovereignty in order to engage in meaningful, good-faith negotiations.
Russia must agree that ceasefire negotiations must precede peace settlement negotiations.
Russia must show its willingness to make concessions of its own in any future bilateral negotiations, especially as the Kremlin appears to be setting conditions to expand its list of demands amid the peace talks.
Russia reportedly continues to expand its military infrastructure along its border with Finland and Estonia, likely in preparation for future aggression against NATO.
Ukraine's Western allies continue to provide military aid to Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Borova and Toretsk. Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Chasiv Yar, Toretsk, and Novopavlivka.

I think supporting Russia because of trans stuff is outrageously dumb.
I also think minimizing the impact that stuff can have on a society when it becomes glorified like it has in the US is outrageously dumb.
The rate at which kids are claiming to be LGBTQ currently is way above any natural level at which you'd expect to see it, and its because our society celebrates and outright glorifies it so much.

EU leaders see no willingness from Trump to pressure Putin – Financial Times
Oleh Pavliuk, Tetyana Oliynyk — Monday, 19 May 2025, 22:42
European leaders who spoke with Donald Trump after his call with Vladimir Putin on 19 May are dismayed that the US President appears unwilling to put pressure on the Kremlin leader.
Source: a source familiar with the conversation speaking to the Financial Times, as reported by European Pravda
Details: After the call with Putin, Trump shared details of the conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well as with the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Finland and the European Commission president.
According to the FT source, the leaders who took part in the call were "stunned" by Trump's description of the outcome of his conversation with Putin.
It was clear that Trump was "not ready to put greater pressure" on Putin to make him take the talks seriously.
As the FT wrote, European capitals are also concerned that Trump could strike a deal with Putin that would satisfy the latter's maximalist demands and run counter to Ukraine's interests.

The options:
"Wants to end the war" or "Playing Games"
I don't think reasonable people can argue that he wants to end the war unless he gets a favorable deal, so that literally leaves one of two options

Zelensky had to remind Trump peace talks already underway during call with EU leaders, Axios reports
by Kateryna Hodunova May 20, 2025 3:28 PM
President Volodymyr Zelensky had to remind U.S. President Donald Trump that negotiations with Russia are already underway after Trump announced to EU leaders the Kremlin's readiness for talks, Axios reported on May 20, citing sources present at the call.
The exchange reportedly took place during a phone call involving Trump, Zelensky, and the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, Finland, and the European Commission. It followed Trump's earlier call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which the Russian leader provided vague assurances about peace efforts but again rejected a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Trump told the leaders that Putin agreed to start direct negotiations on a ceasefire immediately, which led to a few seconds of "puzzled silence" during the call, Axios' source said.
Zelensky then reminded Trump that Putin had previously agreed to this, and the first round of direct talks had already taken place on May 16 in Istanbul, marking the first direct talks between Kyiv and Moscow since 2022. Trump did not directly respond, the sources said.
The Ukrainian president and other leaders also pointed out to Trump that it had been his idea to start the peace talks with an immediate 30-day ceasefire, according to Axios.
Kyiv agreed to a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire on March 11, though Moscow has rejected it. Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose additional sanctions against Russia unless it accepts the deal, but has not taken the step.

I agree.
Putin doesn’t want to settle when he thinks hd can get everything he wants. Why should he take less than his demands?
The only thing that might make him take a deal is if things aren’t going well for their economy or their military. 20km a day and low oil revenues aren’t a winning formula in the long run, but in the short run they may sacrifice and succeed.
We saw Trump’s response. It was a real nothing burger. The key now is what will Europe do.
