The above is a quote from a June 2024 article. It seems Russia is struggling to regain lost ground.

Is this one of the Himars on a second floor of a building?

We all know that Russia claimed this when HIMARS first proved effective.

The Kursk debacle will be studied in military academies for decades as one of the worst tactical blunders in modern history.

It's interesting to see a Russian badmouthing communism and then pushing a fascist regime's message here

And so close to victory day?

Russia's oil price drops to two-year low, Kremlin faces painful choices – Reuters

quote:

On Monday, Trump stated that both Moscow and Kyiv want to end the war and that Russian ruler Vladimir Putin has become more inclined towards peace following the latest drop in oil prices.

If you go back somewhere over 4,800 pages in this thread, you’ll find the first instance of me pointing out the biggest leverage against Russia is their reliance on oil to keep their economy afloat and how that fact should be used against them to bring them to the negotiating table.

It was the largest tank and the largest air battle ever. The Eastern front will never be duplicated. Hitler messed up big time.

Yes, but it’s too bad Biden didn’t listen.

It was actually 4 separate battles lumped into one, per historians at WWII Museum.

Oil traders panicked to send the price skyrocketing but the demand from China still hasn't reached pre Covid levels. I still don't think that any politician actually understands the oil market. They, like traders, look at crude oil as some monolith with all refineries and oil production pretty much the same and can use any crude oil source. The only thing they differentiate is sweet and sour. That doesn't make a rat's arse to most refineries these days. The sweet only refineries are pretty much all gone by the 1990's

Was discussing Romania's election with a friend from (West) Germany yesterday.

He likened it to Germany's situation with the AfD...

"It's weird to hear that called 'far right,' which I guess it is by 2025 standards... those people are actually the East Germans out in the countryside who want Communism to come back, because they had it easier... they weren't paid much, but neither was anybody else, so they liked that better. They don't want to work at educating themselves to get better employment, they just want a guaranteed job, again, doing little, and a command economy, even if that means doing without things. It's the same thing in Romania, in Hungary, in Slovakia, in Belarus... those populations just outnumber the urban populations. In Germany they don't... for now."

Worldcrunch: Missing Ceaucescu: Meet The Young Romanians Nostalgic For Communism

BUCHAREST – When he’s not glued to his computer screen, Stefan Cornea watches films on TV. At 18 years of age, this Bucharest high school student is fed up with politics, Romania and life in general. “There’s nothing to do here,” he says in a cynical tone. “It was better before. My parents have told me about how it used to be.”

“Before” means the time of Nicolae Ceausescu’s dictatorship, which collapsed in 1989, four years before Stefan was even born. He was not alive when “the Conducator” turned Romania into one of the worst communist autocracies, but he is still convinced that everything was better during the time of “the Genius of the Carpathians.”

There's lots of talk about the coming "Great Upheaval," one of those eras where the world and economy change and when , traditionally, a lot of people just fall to the bottom of societies. I think it actually happened a little while ago and the effects and the observation are just delayed.

ISW Update May 6 2025

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian forces continued limited attacks across the international border near Tetkino and Novyi Put, Kursk Oblast.

Ukrainian forces also continued drone, air, and artillery strikes aimed at isolating Russian units in and near Tetkino.

Kremlin officials are continuing to leverage the mythos of the Soviet Union's role in the Second World War to form the basis of a new state ideology that will span generations and that Russia intends to leverage to justify a future military conflict against the West.

The Kremlin appears to be consolidating around an informal state ideology predicated on perpetuating the belief that the West is determined to encircle and defeat Russia.

Russian officials also appear to be leveraging the story of the Second World War (referred to as the Great Patriotic War in Russia) to dismiss Russia's early failures in the war in Ukraine and present the false image that Russian victory in Ukraine is as inevitable as the Soviet triumph over Germany became at the end of World War II.

Chechen Republic Head Ramzan Kadyrov expressed his desire to resign from his post but acknowledged that only Russian President Vladimir Putin can approve this request. Kadyrov has helped stabilize interethnic tensions in the North Caucasus, and leaving his post without a suitable successor could threaten the stability of Putin's regime.

It remains unclear who might succeed Kadyrov in the event of his resignation or death.

Ukraine and Russia conducted a 205-for-205 prisoner of war (POW) exchange on May 6.

Russian forces advanced near Kupyansk, Toretsk, Novopavlivka, and Velyka Novosilka.

Canada has begun the process of confiscating the Russian An-124 "Ruslan" transport aircraft: the country’s Attorney General has filed a request with the Ontario Superior Court, according to Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna.

This giant is as long as three-quarters of a football field (about 69 meters) and as tall as a 7-story building (21 meters). It was seized in June 2023.

"All steps are leading to one outcome: the "Ruslan" will soon have a new home - in Ukraine, where it will serve for the benefit of our country." - the official wrote.

Several Russian media outlets, citing unnamed officials, report that Kiev is planning attacks in Moscow on May 9, allegedly "worse" than the usual drone strikes. The Russian Armed Forces are said to be ready for massive retaliation if that happens.

According to the same sources, Putin has personally ordered a target list for Oreshnik strikes on Kiev, and some high-ranking officials are already fleeing the capital ahead of Victory Day.

In theory, this should be a sufficient deterrent, but if deterrence worked on the Kiev regime, there wouldn’t be a war in the first place...

Also, if anyone from the Russian MOD is reading this, feel free to give me a call. I'll help draft the target list, no consultation fee required.

Some have been on this unexpected airport tour since yesterday, as dozens of flights were either delayed or canceled - especially in Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, and Domodedovo. Meanwhile, airports in Volgograd, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, and Samara are offering a similar "grounded travel experience."
